Vista url.dll shortcut corrupt
by Guest Lee Eppel- 0 replies
When I create a shortcut to my desktop of a url the default url icon Vista uses seems corrupt ie it should just be an internet explorer shortcut on my desktop. I can change the icon to another icon found in this file:%SystemRoot%\system32\SHELL32.dll but the default ie shortcut url is corrupt. All I want is for the shortcut to look like the default url/internet explorer shortcut icon ie XP. It appears that this setting is in the registry. But that the shell32.dll file is also located on my d-drive(recovery) I think what happened was somehow when I transferred my desktop settings from my XP system to my Vista laptop that this functionality was corru…

cannot set folders to show as web content
by Guest Team ZR-1- 0 replies
Somehow something changed with my Win2000 with SP4 where I can no longer set hard drive folders as web content. That option is grayed out and cannot be set. If I click on set default a folder changes somewhat but if I get out and go back to that folder its back to classic mode. Also for the taskbar, before I could right click anywhere on it and get to task monitor or to make changes for toolbar. Now I can only get this popup is to right click far right where time is, I can now click for task manager but toolbar functions are grayed out. What got changed and how to fix it. Thanks

Re: WindowsMe is Dying
by Guest Greegor- 0 replies

Crossposted to: alt.windows-me,microsoft.public.windowsme.general How much work are you willing to do to fix up a 9 year old PC? At 350 MHz clock rate, it's awfully slow. Can't run DVD, can't do ROM burning (with exceptions), horrendously slow for internet use, etc. I use castoff computers in the 500MHz range, but the 350MHz I have in the basement (IBM) would be consigned to be an MP3 player jukebox and maybe for a photo archive (duplicate set). If your community garbage haulers have a day for spring cleaning where they don't charge for disposal of tires and junk computers, you could trade up to a 1GHz or better. Corporations and colleges are getting…

Dear All, Ages ago, I stumbled across a post (either on a newsgroup, or google) that told me how to reduce the things that windows copies on a Roaming Profile, and for the life of me I can't find it anymore...I was only wanting things like Favourites, Start Menu, etc... Application Data, tmp, My Documents, etc? I don't want copying back and forth.. Hope someone can remind me of what I did ages ago to sort this problem... Regards Paul.

My favorites defaulted back to set up after my updates last night
by Guest Garden216- 0 replies

Last night my updates ran (set for auto update during the night). I checked and got KB905866, KB941651, KB939653, KB941202, KB933729. Yesterday I was on line and all of my many Favorites were there. This a.m. I was set back to the Favorites I had in mid May when I purchased my laptop. Something happened during the updates! I have searched to see if they were renamed and put some where else. I could not find I even searched for one or 2 individual bookmarks and they are not found. When I look in the Favorites folder it matches the links I have on the Favorites dropdown-the mmid may list. Any gentle and basic guidance will be appreciated. Am I …

We lost our second DC a week ago. I installed a new DC. A few days later the only Windows '98 PC that logs into the domain gets an error indicating "the password is incorrect or they do not have permission to log into the domain." Since the only thing that changed was the new DC, I turned it off. They were able to immediately log into the domain. The first DC is named Server1 and the new DC is called DC2. Any ideas? TIA jwkh

problem in taskbar properties (bug)
by Guest Dusk- 0 replies
It appears that there is a bug in the taskbar property manager when some symbols (such as networking, speakers, and battery) are selected, the preview screen gets rid of the wrong ones, or adds in the wrong ones. On the actual screen there is no problem, but is there some way to fix this? I am currently running Vista Buisness Edition, with a Sony laptop. Anyone have a suggestion?

Is there a way to automate changing search indexing parameters?
by Guest Paul Randall- 0 replies
Hi, I want to play with various ways to make indexed search work to my liking. Question 1: Are there some command line utility or VBScripting ways to change what is indexed, and if so, what are they and where are they documented? For example, I'm thinking that in order to be able to index all files (meaning ALL, no matter who the owner is, or hidden or system status, or whatever), perhaps I could change the option to index every file extension with the 'file properties' filter. I'm thinking that this filter should allow rebuilding the index in a matter of minutes and give rapid results similar to what we got with W98. Doing that manually has two pro…

I was trying to setup an internal cert server for administrative use (for things like Dell's Server Manager and other hardware based interfaces) and i was able to setup cert server ok and generate certs just fine but IE still gives me an error because its not a trusted CA. I went to the http://server/certsrv and i noticed there is a link to "Download a CA certificate, certificate chain, or CRL" and i click on that and it gives me a link to install a "Certificate chain" and says that if i install that it will add it as a trusted CA, and that the server should be a trusted root CA. so i do that, it installs fine, i look in IE and i can see my server is in that hu…

OLE Compound File

We have a user who is trying to open a Microsoft Word document at our company which is published to the company web page. However, when he clicks on the file link, he gets a frame inside of Internet Explorer saying "OLE Compound File" and then showing some file details. Everyone else who clicks on the link has the document open properly as a Word file. Does anyone have any suggestions?

"No right" to run a pw recovery program
by Guest Aristide de la Tanne- 0 replies

On a new PC with preinstalled Vista Home Premium, I tried to install the password recovery tool Revelationv2 from http://www.snadboy.com. It failed with the error of not recognizing some helper dll. Then I tried to copy the main revelation.exe from a usb stick to the desktop. But it refuses since I "do not have the right to do so". However, that does not happen with other exe files. I even cannot look up rightclick - properties - security. What control in Vista may be responsible for this restriction? Thank you, Aristide
