Strange welcome screen berhavior
by Guest Jeff Barnett- 0 replies

XP SP2 simple file sharing (work group) with welcome screen and passwords I logout of one account, returning to welcome screen, then log into another account. The music plays and I return to the welcome screen without the login taking effect. If I try to login a second time, music plays as before and the login works properly. This is intermittent behavior but has happened several times over the last few months. I've checked the computer for Trojans, etc., using a utility recommended/provided by Eset and have no other symptoms to speak of. Any one have a clue as to what might be going on? -- Jeff Barnett

Has anyone done a comparison between AHCI enabled and disabled? Is it worth the hassle? -- You can get more with a kind word and a 2x4 than just a kind word.

services running question
by Guest Steve T- 0 replies

I checked Task Manager this morning to see what services were running and I had OE's, msimn.exe; listed 7-8 times. What would cause that to occur? I run Mailwasher Pro in minimized mode while I work, then click Restore when notified of email. I check my mail then launch OE if I want the email but always shutdown OE and minimize Mailwasher. I just rebooted and ran OE, only one instance of msimn.exe running now. Thanks, Steve T.

Briefcase and orphans
by Guest RobN- 0 replies

I am trying to use the Briefcase feature on a laptop with Windows XP Home. When I try to drag into the briefcase the My Documents folder, I get an "Update Briefcase" dialog appear for most of the files which states, "[file name] will not be updated because its merge handler cannot be loaded." Furthermore, although I can't remember at what point I saw this, but I was also given a message at some stage that the files were orphans??? Although I regularly use briefcases on my desktop computer and have done so for some years successfully, this laptop is giving me some grief! Can anyone help me with this? Rob

I have my old PC set to Dual Boot Windows XP Pro (IDE Slave) and Windows 2000Pro (IDE Master) - No Problems My new PC has Vista Ultimate 64bit running on 2 Dual mirrored 320gb Sata Drives. In addition I have 2 older 40gb IDE drives. Like on my old PC I installed Windows 2000 Pro on the Master (E:) and XP Pro on the slave (F:). I Use the boot drive menu to select the Boot drive. Slow connection to shared folders on a workgroup
by Guest bill- 0 replies

I have 3 systems on a workgroup. 1 is hosting a shared folder with roughly 6gb of data in it. Every time I attempt to open any of the sub folders from the other 2 systems it takes roughly 30 seconds. Is it possible to make those systems cache that information? Notes: Each system is showing that it's connected at 100mbps, and all are using XP Home SP2 with 2.0Ghz procs or higher with 512 ram. When I run MS process monitor it shows the system query for each file is successful. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Windows Update installation failure kb936514
by Guest Tommy- 0 replies

I am having a problem installing 936514. The machines in question are identically imaged and only a few are having a problem with the installation. I receive the error: "The installation failed, this can be due to a corrupted installation database." These machines do not currently have Office 2007 installed. They do, however, have the Compatibility Pack to which (if I read the KB correctly) does require the update, and they do detect that the update is needed through Automatic Updates. These machines did have Office 2007 installed on them in the past which has been fully removed and does not show up in "Add / Remove Programs." Interestingly eno…
