The Apple Watch retail experience
by Guest Rene Ritchie- 0 replies
Starting today you can make an appointment at your local Apple Retail Store — or simply drop by — and try on an Apple Watch. Orders are online only for now, but the idea of the Apple Watch try-ons is to help you decide if you really want one and which one you really want. It's a way to get some eyes- and hands-on time with the hardware and software, so you can see the cases, feel the bands, experience the interface and interactions, and get as much of the Apple Watch experience as possible. When you first walk in you're greeted by a table, wooden like all Apple Retail tables, but with glass covering two rows of Apple Watches, one of 38mm and one of 42mm. They face…

EFF busts patent troll's podcasting patent
by Guest Peter Cohen- 0 replies
The Electronic Frontier Foundation on Friday announced victory against a patent troll that demanded money from podcasters. And while the EFF says that it's a key victory, the non-profit organization says that there's much left to do. What's more, the company at the center of the controversy remains in business. A ruling from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) invalidated key claims in the "podcasting patent" held by a patent troll called Personal Audio, LLC, according to a press release from the EFF. The EFF said the ruling came down after it filed a petition for review. Personal Audio, LLC has, since 2013, demanded licensing fees from prominent podca…

Apple CEO Tim Cook stated today in a quick interview that pre-orders for the Apple Watch have been "great". In a chat with CNBC at the Apple Store in Palo Alto, California, Cook said he has been receiving reports about the Apple Watch from around the world this morning and says the reaction from consumers have been "extraordinary". He added "Customers have been giving us great feedback and orders have been great, as well." Cook was wearing the stainless Apple Watch with white sport band, as he's often done, during his Palo Alto Apple Store visit. Cook said this particular band is the one he wears the most. "I love it. by Guest Joseph Keller- 0 replies

Apple's iPhoto and Aperture photo editing and management applications have been removed from the Mac App Store. Following the release of OS X 10.10.3 earlier this week, which included the new Photos app for OS X, Apple has removed iPhoto and Aperture from the Mac App Store. Both apps are now unavailable for purchase, though they can still be downloaded from the Purchases tab in the store by those who already own the applications. While Photos will serve as the primary way to manage and edit your photos on OS X going forward, dedicated users of iPhoto and Aperture might want to hold on to those apps for right now. If you're feeling ready to make the jump, however, ch…

Customers were able to get their hands on the watch, and try them on. The Apple Store employees were on-hand to answer any questions related to the watch, as well as the new MacBook, which was also available at the store. Apple CEO Tim Cook also put in an…

How to report iMessage spam in iOS 8.3
by Guest Allyson Kazmucha- 0 replies
If you've ever received spam in the form of an iMessage, it's a good idea to report it as junk to Apple. While you've always been able to report iMessages as spam, you can now do it in a lot fewer steps if you're running iOS 8.3 or above. Reporting junk iMessages will help Apple to remove spammer accounts from their servers, making iMessage a much happier place for everyone. In order to report an iMessage as junk, just follow these steps: Keep in mind that you'll only see an option to mark a message as junk if it's an iMessage, meaning a blue bubble message. Green bubble, or regular SMS, messages won't have the junk option. You can however completely block both iM…

A new story says that Nokia is reportedly "exploring" the idea of selling off its HERE Maps division. The company may decide to ditch the maps business in part to concentrate its time on its wireless network division. HERE Maps is already getting some interest from other companies and private-equity firms, according to Bloomberg's unnamed sources. It adds: The Finnish company, which is working with a financial adviser, may decide against a sale if it can't get a price it deems sufficient, the people said. HERE reported full-year sales of 970 million euros and an operating loss of 1.24 billion euros, including a goodwill impairment of 1.21 billion euros, accor…

Developers talk about importance of quick actions and notifications in Apple Watch apps
by Guest Joseph Keller- 0 replies

A number of developers have opened up about the lessons they learned while developing apps for the Apple Watch. The Apple Watch, is generally meant for quick interactions: checking the time, looking up a score for a game, or sending a text. Brevity and simplicity are among the best practices for designing an Apple Watch app, and while some developers initially planned on simply creating smaller versions of their exiting iPhone apps, many found that they needed to re-think their apps for the much smaller screen of the watch. On the Apple Watch, notifications have become particularly important, according to The Wall Street Journal: Adam Grossman, founder of Dark Sk…

The Force is with us big-time this week: We’ve got stories about Skype Translator debuting in Mandarin and Italian, Build 2015 making a first-ever road tour worldwide, and all six Star Wars films being available digitally for the first time on Xbox Video. Skype Translator adds two more languages, Mandarin and Italian, joining Spanish and English in the preview program. Adding Mandarin Chinese is quite a feat; it’s a “very challenging language to learn, even for Skype Translator,” noted Yasmin Khan in a Skype blog post. “With approximately 10,000 characters and multiple tones, this is one of the most difficult languages for a native English speaker to master, along with…

NSFW: Putting things in perspective
by Guest Peter Cohen- 0 replies

We're only a few hours into Apple Watch pre-order day, and already I want to put my fist through a wall. New Apple product releases have become a sadly predictable affair in watching people desperately trying to get their place in line, only to be disappointed when things don't go their way. I'm sick and tired of it. Not getting your Apple Watch on April 24th? Shut up. Consider yourself fortunate — blessed, even — that this is your pressing concern. The Apple Watch only went on pre-order sale in the wee hours this morning, and already I'm seeing plenty of sturm und drang from folks on social media who are upset that the ship time on their order doesn't gu…

Yes, I bought a non-Retina MacBook in 2015 — and it's awesome
by Guest Rich Stevens- 0 replies

"She may not look like much, but she's got it where it counts, kid. I've added some special modifications myself." I love the Millennium Falcon. The idea of a junky space ship being faster than all the fancy ones really appeals to me. And in part, I think this is why I love tinkering with my Macs so much. Recently, my 2012 Macbook Pro started acting up, and I got The Fear. Video glitches, trackpad freakouts, high CPU temps, and random shutdowns. It was clear: I needed to move laptops. And as pretty as the new MacBook is, it's a little too much for my pocketbook right now. Instead, I opted for the thick, "outdated," 13-inch non-Retina Macbook Pro. And I love it. S…

Which Apple Watch did you get?
by Guest Rene Ritchie- 0 replies

Apple Watch is now available for pre-order, so the question becomes — which one did you pre-order? Which Apple Watch did you get? I went with the 42mm Space Black Apple Watch. 4-6 weeks delivery though. My mother and sister both went space gray Apple Watch Sport. Looks like 3-5 weeks delivery for them. Depending on the case and band you chose, and how fast you chose it, you might be getting yours on April 24... or sometime thereafter. So, vote in the poll to the left to let me know which case you went with, and add your details, including shipping estimate below, including any extra bands you might have picked up. (I added a black sport band and a Milanese, becau…

A newly-released ransomware strain's poor coding allows victims in most cases to access their files without parting with a cent. A new strain of ransomware has been broken, allowing for victims to circumvent payment and access their locked data. The Scraper ransomware, originally known as Torlocker, was discovered in October last year and granted the name Trojan-Ransom.Win32.Scrape. The ransomware encrypts a victim's files -- including documents, video, images and database copies -- and demands a ransom of at least $300 to unlock and decrypt documents. However, due to errors in encryption algorithms, in 70 percent of cases files can be unlocked without submitting…
