T7700 (fast) laptop, 4GB Ram Vista Business SP1 No weird stuff, very clean, otherwise stable Three times in the past 36 hours, with no warning, the unit froze. Cursor disappeared and couldn't be recovered - tab didn't work, neither did Ctl-Alt-Del. I had to do a hard shutdown with the power button. In common to all three events was Adobe Reader opening a ..pdf or reading one, though Thunderbird and Firefox were both open at the time as well (not "working"). Can you help me diagnose the problem - and perhaps solve it? Thank you! Ike

Hi, I'm trying to configure AxIS to allow an ActiveX control to install under IE7 on Vista SP1 on a regular locked account. The problem is it's failing and I'm looking for confirmation as to why. **The setup** - The site is Internet based and HTTPS. - The ActiveX control CAB file install package is signed with a valid trusted publishers certificate. - The actual .dll/.ocx file contained within the signed CAB is NOT signed. - I set a value of 1,1,1,0 for TPSSignedControl, SignedControl, UnsignedControl, and ServerCertificatePolicy respectively under the AxIS policy. **Reference material** http://technet2.microsoft.com/windowsserver2008/en/library/7…

I installed the MS updates that came out on 6/11, they all installed successfully. Since then, I've got a couple of messages upon waking up the computer about devices that would work faster on USB 2.0, which I have in my computer (an XPS420). Today when I ran my backup to an external hard drive (connected on USB), instead of running in about 25 minutes, it was only about 25% done after 30 minutes. I could see also that the CPU usage was only about 5% instead of the usual 25-30%. It looked like it was running on USB 1.1. I ran a system restore to back out the updates, and everything is back to normal. The complete backup ran in 28 minutes and the CPU usage …

So these are Adam's make-believe buddies (Bill & Frank) he grumbles about all the time! No wonder Adam takes so much blood pressure medicine! His doctor has warned him to avoid situations that could cause his blood pressure to rise. Can you guys just leave him alone for awhile....please? We had to get rid of our dog because Adam would get off his computer, chase the dog and bite him!

On Windows 2000 computers, the dectect slow network for user profiles is not working correctly. The gpresult is showing the policy is being applied. It works for Windows XP. The issue is isolated to any 2000 workstation. The threshold is 1 ms and 555555 kbs. Not really sure what else to try. I did some research online and found one article from microsoft that wasn't helpful. Anyone else have any ideas?

Im running XP Home, and had a problem with the screen saver not coming on after the time out period...note SP2. I found a response on XP general concerning DVD drivers loading up at startup causing a problem (cyberlink Power DVD). Indeed removing the driver from startup via MSconfig fixed the issue... hurray. I loaded the SP3 update, no probem the screen saver still was working. Today... auto update loaded some fixes regarding MS Ooffice sp3, now the screen saver is back to non operation status (except in preview mode). I checked the DVD driver it is still unloaded. Anyone have any clues on how this latest update put the monkey whench back in …

Hi all, I have an issue on one of my servers where clients will attempt to open a file from Word, Excel, Acrobat, or even the Run command and it will hang if a particular share is selected from the drop down. It doesn't happen when selecting other shares on the same server. It will eventually open if you have 3 minutes to wait. This does not occur when opening files from Windows Explorer either. Access to the share is quick and responsive. I also do not have this issue from accross the WAN. I can open the same share from Word while at our second site with no problem or lag. Any help on this will be greatly appreciated, -- C Lewis

A friend of mine has recently been having problems with Internet radio. It makes no difference which station she tries. An example station is http://www.cklq.com/ Windows media player seems to crash after a variable time of playing (anything from 5 to 40 minutes). The audio stops and does not restart. Repeatedly pressing the play button makes it play for a fraction of a second. The computer is an Acer box with 1GB RAM and Vista SP1 with all updates. I even put the optional driver updates on. The problem does not occur on my own computer on the same ISP with same DSL service in the same town but I'm using XP not vista. It seems unlikely to be a bandwidth i…

The XP printer is set to shared on an XP machine. Vista correctly selects the XP shared printer. But it will not print when I send it a web page. If I send it an email message, or a document from my Vista compute it prints. What is causing the printer to ignore web page prints?

Hi there, can someone tell me how to enable printing for normal users. I can print fine as an administrator, but not as a normal user. If I run the printer properties logged on a normal user and run as administrator, I can print a test page OK.

I have the same printer - love it - but it's not compatible with Vista and HP has discontinued the model and isn't updating drivers for Vista compatibility. I am able to scan with it using Windows Photo Gallery instead of HP Director. Search Windows Help & Support for "scan a picture" for directions. Works great. I came across an article just last week relating to a WSUS update problem when running Windows Vista as a Virtual PC guest OS. Just today, I encountered this problem again, and now I cannot locate that article. Searches are not producing the correct results either. I am certain that the fix was the creation of a registry key inside the guest OS, but I cannot remember for the lilfe of me what that key is. Has anyone else encountered this issue? Does anyone else know the fix? Vista SP1 running as a guest on Virtual PC 2007 on a Vista SP1 host. Attempting to connect to WSUS 3.0 SP1 running on WS03 R2 SP2. Richard

I have various folders in my Windows XP windows folder that I would like to delete as they seem to be just taking up space. But I am not sure what they are for and if they are necessary. Files such as: KB933360.log, KB935840.log etc Folders such as: NS9-KB932557_ENU, RS9-KB932557.ENU, SQL9_KB932557_ENU These folders all have folders such as: 1028,1030,1033,1040 etc. Can I just delete these? I have new pc's that automatically logon/start a Citrix session. The problem is these pc's have wireless nic's, and it seems that when they boot, the Citrix tries to connect before the wireless nic's have a chance to pick up an IP address. So the Citrix start up fails. Anyway for the wireless nic's to get an ip address before the citrix connection or to delay the citrix connection until after getting an ip address?
