This is on a Athlon 64 machine running 32 bit Vista Ultimate with SP1 installed. It was set to auto download and install updates and it has worked well until yesterday with the subject update. I've tried manual download and install and always get the same problem. The install gets to the configuring updates 3 of 3, gets to 87%, restarts, and continually loops these steps. I have to do a restore from the Repair function on the OS disc. When I look at the update history there are 3 failed installs of the subject update with an error code 800F0816. Sorry about the cross posting but I just realized I posted to the wrong group originally. I meant to post here…

We have setup offlines files via a GPO so that users can make a specific share available offline if they work with a laptop. Once they enable the share offline it synchronises and everything works perfectly. Our annoyance is that if we then login as another user or even the local admin on that PC, offline files tries to synchronise even though the PC is not on the network. Is there a way to ensure offline files only synchronises if the primary user logs in / out of the PC? -- Cheers, Steve Gordon MCSE, MCSA: Messaging

This is really odd. I had to do a repair (In-place upgrade) install on a Dell Dimension 3000 running XP SP2. It was one of those systems that are supplied without an installation disc, so I made one using the Dimension's I386 folder and another Dell XP SP2 install disc for the rest of the stuff. The repair appeared to go fine. However, when I went to check that all the device drivers had re-installed OK, the My Computer Properties Hardware tab was not in English: It seems to be in one of the Scandinavian languages. So does the IE(6) Tools menu. There may be other places, but I haven't gone through everything yet. It occurs to me that this may have result…

We are currently rolloing out SP3 for Windows XP. We currently have Windows XP SP2 desktops. After installation of SP3 and after a reboot we have found that some PC's would not print. The user had to delete the network printer and reinstall the printer before they could print. SP3 is being pushed out by SMS2003. Has anyone else come across this before and what did you do about it?

I have a 29mb log file "log_fs.log" in my root folder. What is is it? This location is referenced - "[C:\SVN_Source\fslib\ntfsparser.cpp]". I am assuming that location was created as a result of some activity, as it is not there now. Seems to have something to do with MFT records. A "google" did not provide anything useful. Thanks in advance :)

Following a re-format because a sudden request for password could not be fixed, I now get the password box with Administrator in one box but pale and the notice: This system could not log on. Make sure username and domain are correct then type your passowrd again. Letters in passoword must bei typed using correct case." Since I do not have a password I tried typing the name which I assigned to the PC while installing WinXP and it works. What can I do to bring normalcy back into my life? I certainly don't want to be faced by the above and have to re-format again? -- Nurmi

Windows Vista as you know have so many problems in itself that sometimes it bugs so much that you've about to get rid of it, though it has many nice features that stops you from doing that. I have resolved the issue which I've been fighting with for quite a long period of time in quick couple steps. Just change the directory in regedit back to C:/Program Files and after installing these "crucial" updates change it back to the recent one. This deals with the error nice and easy. I guarantee it goes smooth, I've just used this method to fight the problem and it's now all gone. Cheers! Regards

Joe, I just bought a computer with a gforce 8600gt video card and after several weeks, my computer starting acting identical to what you are saying yours is doing. after troubleshooting everything as you have, i contacted the computer company and they had me exchange the video card...sure enough the new card worked just fine. I might suggest try installing a different card into your present computer or try installing your present card into another computer...this would be a step to determine if you have a faulty card.
