We've seen a lot of cunning hackers exploit weak or dumb security measures to compromise users' information. One unidentified hacker did just that in June, for instance, by using a fake passport against an unthinking Facebook customer support representative. But just because you're a hacker doesn't mean you're smart. Don't believe me? Ask Dwayne C. Hans. Last week, law enforcement arrested Hans, 27, of Richland, Washington and charged him suspicion of computer fraud, wire fraud, and money laundering. Why? For being one of the stupidest hackers in history. Hans's first offense came sometime between 28 April and 17 June 2016 when he gained unauthorized acc…

Today, Google’s Threat Analysis group disclosed a critical vulnerability in Windows in a public post on the company’s security blog. The bug itself is very specific — allowing attackers to escape from security sandboxes through a flaw in the win32k system — but it’s serious enough to be categorized as critical, and according to Google, it’s being actively exploited. As a result, Google went public just 10 days after reporting the bug to Microsoft, before a patch could be coded and deployed. The result is that, while Google has already deployed a fix to protect Chrome users, Windows itself is still vulnerable — and now, everybody knows it. Google’s disclosure provides o…

Business owners are all over the map when it comes to their needs and level of understanding, so Microsoft’s vision is to create technology that allows you, the small business owner, to do more. We have worked with partners like Toshiba to create devices that run all the required apps, like Office and QuickBooks, so you can focus on running you…

A small town figured out a way to help neighbors despite state law. The state of North Carolina told the town of Wilson they couldn’t sell high-speed internet service to nearby towns, so the town is providing access for free while appealing to the state General Assembly, according to Ars Technica. Wilson, North Carolina, has a municipal fiber optic broadband internet service called Greenlight. In compliance with state law, they did not offer it outside the town. In 2015, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) said the North Carolina law and a similar law in Tennessee preventing municipal providers from selling service to other towns was wrong and preempted it. …

Every time some company comes up with an idea that’s sort of like a flying car, we have to ask, “Yeah, but what about living like The Jetsons?” Uber has apparently been thinking about this too, announcing that it’s been working on a flying car project. Uber published a lengthy white paper [PDF] today on the project as well as an accompanying Medium post, detailing its efforts to launch an on-demand flying car service called Uber Elevate. Uber says the network of small, fully electric aircraft will be able to take off and land vertically to pick up passengers, thus earning them the moniker of Vertical Take-off and Landing aircraft, or VTOL. The aircraft will enable r…

A new tech support scam warns that a victim's hard drive will be wiped of all data... unless, of course, they call the fake customer support number. This scam initiates whenever a user visits a malicious website. Immediately, it tries to scare the victim with a unusual tactic, as Siddhesh Chandrayan of Symantec explains: "The web page displays a fake 'hard drive delete timer' that warns the user that their hard drive will be deleted within five minutes. A warning audio tone is also played in the background, which again warns the user that their system is infected." The scam also displays a pop-up alert in the browser that the user's computer has been infected by …

A deep-dive into Cluster OS Rolling Upgrades in Windows Server 2016
by Guest Microsoft Windows Server- 0 replies
- 92 views
The story of Failover Clustering in Windows Server goes back to Windows NT! This feature was developed largely as a way to keep servers and their underlying applications and workloads running – even if a node in the cluster was to fail. It ensures high uptime requirements and Service Level Agreements can be met. Over time, new capabilities like live migration make a service running on a cluster even more resilient and agile when cluster nodes need to be drained and rebalanced while apps, processes and services continue to run. But one challenge that remained with cluster management until now was how to upgrade the underlying host operating systems on cluster nodes. Win…

The release of the Mirai source code demonstrates just how easy it has become to hijack poorly-protected Internet of Things devices into botnets. Mirai has become infamous in recent weeks after blasting the website of security blogger Brian Krebs off the internet with a massive distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack, powered by compromised internet-enabled DVRs and IP cameras. What can you on an individual basis do about this at home or in the office to make sure you're not contributing to the problem? Well, you can make sure that your IoT devices aren't "protected" by dumb default usernames and passwords, such as the following which are hardcoded into Mirai…

This post was authored by Cosmos Darwin, Program Manager, Windows Server. The Challenge In the Windows Server team, we tend to focus on going big. Our enterprise customers and service providers are increasingly relying on Windows as the foundation of their software-defined datacenters, and needless to say, our hyperscale public cloud Azure does too. Recent big announcements like support for 24 TB of memory per server with Hyper-V, or 6+ million IOPS per cluster with Storage Spaces Direct, or delivering 50 Gb/s of throughput per virtual machine with Software-Defined Networking are the proof. But what can these same features in Windows Server do for smaller deplo…
