I've been reading around on this topic & find most content relevant to IE or desktop icons in response to requests for how to change/delete these icons. Few others are about installations gone bad that change all icons to execute one thing or another. What I'd like to know is, on what action(s) does Vista decide to change a directory icon to a shortcut icon & why? Got a laptop with Vista Business (x32) pre-installed & I use it as little as possible because it's rediculously unintuitive. Even doing a search on this icon behavior has taken more time reading than the knowledge is worth. I do not want to be an IT expert when I grow up. I shouldn…

I've been reading about Windows CardSpace, which I discovered in the Control Panel of my Windows XP Home SP 3. It seems to me that there's nothing unique about CardSpace (aka InfoCard) that doesn't already exist. A 'managed' InfoCard issued by a third party identity provider seems quite similar to a digital certificate. A self-issued 'personal' InfoCard can be compared to software that fills in forms for you. I just don't 'get' the innovation behind CardSpace. Is there something unique about it, or is it just competition for digital certificates and RoboForms? Nothing wrong with competition, of course, I'm just wondering if there's a compelling reason …

I have a mixed network of 2003, 2000, and NT servers. There are about 20 users that I set up with roaming profiles and BASIC redirected my documents folders. I have a share with Everyone having full control then set the profile path as \\server\share\%username%. The redirected folders points to a different server as the profile to avoid long log on times. The profiles aren't roaming. Users have to run our drive mapping script and our printer setup script. What's the deal? What are something that I can look at. The event log doesn't show anything unusal that gives me any clues something's wrong. Thanks,

I am running Windows Vista Home Premium on Dell XPS 420 with 4gigs RAM quad core processor. I have Norton 360 installed. When I try to run Windows Update, I get error 80240016. I have read through other posts. I tried sfc /scannow without success. I went into the event viewer:Windows log:Application and I find multiple entries of: error CAPI2 11. I went to Microsoft Technet who tell me that this is "Failed extract of third-party root list from auto update cab at: %1> with error: %2. It suggests resolve: Check permissions on temp dir: It tells me to ensure that the user account logged on to the computer has full control permission. I did this. Verify Te…

I've been suffering with the black screen on boot up problem - it just appeared overnight on a previously working install. I've managed to (temporarily more than likely) solve the problem by unplugging a number of USB devices which were, prior to physically moving the PC, plugged in to different USB ports on the mobo. I had these USB devices plugged in to these original ports when I installed Vista - the problem started after moving the PC and plugging the devices in to different ports. If I plug the USB devices in to the mobo and boot the PC Vista will oftenboot to the black unresponsive desktop (just the mouse pointer on the screen and nothing else). …

I am looking to set up Shadow copy on a Windows Storage Server2003. I have a primary volume that is presently 1.4TB. Technet recommends "Use an allocation unit size of 16 (KB) or larger on a source volume on which shadow Copies of Shared Folders will be Enabled. (Apparently there could be loss of files with defragmentation of the volume). The volume default cluser size is 4KB. I am considering splitting the size of this disK space into 2 volumes - One volume(D:) for files and the other volume(E:) for Storing Shadow Copies. Prior to loading any files and enabling shadow copy I have the following questions: Q: If the D volume is enabled for shadow c…

Sometime after upgrading Windows XP Home Edition SP2 to SP3 we started to experience an odd hanging. If the computer is not used for several hours (hibernate, standby, and turn off hard disks are all off), we can click on an icon on the desktop to highlight it. We can then click on a different icon and that will become highlighted without a problem, but as soon as we try to open something (program, folder, etc.) from either the desktop or the Taskbar, Windows freezes. The mouse will still move around, but you cannot click on anything. You can hover over the expand arrow on the system tray and it does say "Show hidden icons", but if you click on the arr…

Recurring problem with Auto File Back up feature set for weekly backups. Works fine for several weeks and then I get following error: "The back up did not complete successfully. A shadow copy could not be created for the following reason: The shadow copy provider had an unexpected error while trying to process the specified operation. (0x8004230F)." Rebooting fixes the problem for a few weeks then it starts again.[image: file:///C:/Users/Richard/AppData/Local/Temp/moz-screenshot-2.jpg] -- zalophus

An interesting fact about the audiodg.exe process (Windows Audio Device Graph Isolation), is that it runs with normal CPU priority. My experience with multimedia tells me that multimedia threads should be using High or Real-time priority. What happens when I simply open Tasks Manager on the Processes page, is that the audio playback starts dropping packets of samples. Consider all that is running is the Task Manager and some MP3 player (could be Windows Media Player MPlayer or whatever you like). Unfortunately that process is isolated and protected, so I'm not allowed to change it's CPU scheduling priority. Does anyone knows how to take over an isolated…

Hi, I've perfomed the following on two machines: * Start > Run > wbemtest * Connect > root\CIMV2 * Query: "select * from win32_temperatureprobe" On the one machine, I get two entries which I can check the values of (though not the actual temperature I want!). On the other machine, I don't get an error, but no entries are returned. Any idea what's going on? Perhaps a required service is not running on the second machine or something like that? Thanks in advance, Alain

Actually, I am using Windows XP. But I did just figure out how to work around this problem and something analogous might work in Vista as well. After countless uninstalls/reinstalls, I finally stumbled upon this solution. Not really sure how or why it works, but it does. Find your twain_32 folder. On XP, this is C:\Windows\twain_32. Find the subfolder for the device that isn't working. I'm using a Lide30 and for me that folder is: C:\WINDOWS\twain_32\CNQL30. Edit your environment variable and add an entry to the System Variable named Path. Since %SystemRoot% equals "C:\Windows\twain_32", I added: %SystemRoot%\twain_32\CNQL30 Restart any open programs, an…
