I tried this but the chkdsk said my C: drive was clean. I have two other hard drives that I didn't check, but since my windows is on C: I figured I didn't need to. I've got 5 updates I can't get installed. I have a blank desktop after the Vista loading screen that just shows the mouse cursor. I cannot ctrl+alt+del or anything unless I run "repair" off of the disc. Nothing there fixes my blank desktop problem nor does any F8 startup function when booting up my system. I can only bring up the task manager through the command prompt from the "repair" disc, but it doesn't show explorer.exe in the processes. I tried putting explorer.exe as a new task but this is the message I get: Windows cannot find 'explorer.exe'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. I also tried to put C:\windows\explorer.exe and I get this message: The ordinal 874 could…

Hi guys, I have a bit of a problem here.. It only does this on my vista PC, and has done ever since i got it. (Seems a few [not all] kids at my college also have the same issue). We can hibernate and Standby our pc's just fine. (By shutting the lid, or choosing the option from the OS) However, on resume, we all seem to get a Host Process error message. Saying that it stopped responding, and/or was closed. Im also running a DIFFERENT version of Vista to the others. I'm running Ultimate. They're running Vista Business. Does anyone know what the issue may be (Sorry, solution). And yes, I did previously mention a school, so we are on a domain. These issues …

I use the Opera browser. I run XP pro/SP2. I do not get the browser icon when I save a web page as an HTM file. Instead, I get a sort of empty looking icon. (On close inspection this turns out to be a page with an open window in it.) If I go to XP's File Types (in Folder Options) and then to the file type HTM, it is shown with an Opera icon but this icon does not get used when I create an HTM file. How do I get the icon when I save HTM files?

As I mentioned in my post on Cross Document Messaging, client side cross domain request is an important area of interest for AJAX developers looking for ways to avoid expensive server side proxying calls. While Cross Document Messaging is useful for allowing third party components or gadgets embedded in a page to communicate/converse using script on both sides, other cross domain scenarios like web services require access to cross domain content using network requests from a client side web application. For example, you may want to use your client side map based mashup to pinpoint Chinese restaurants for your current neighborhood. This could require the mashup to request …

I've got a Logitech Wave KB and mouse. Each time I press the center wheel the Task Switcher pops up, regardless of if it's for opening a link in a new tab, for moving around in The Sims or whatever. I looked around and I find people asking exactly the opposite: how to use the center wheel to perform task switch. Inadvertedly I've got it done but I don't want it. What can I do to disable this? UPDATE: Found it. I had to configure it as GENERIC BUTTON -- mpab Posted via http://www.vistaheads.com

I have a simple custom performance counter that is created each time my service starts. The category is created at install time. I can connect to the service's process and see my counter incrementing correctly. Perform shows this value as 0 regardless, however this was working a few reinstalls ago. It did stop working after I had to reboot my computer to fix a "this installation has been marked as deleted (or similar)" error message. I am sure I am checking the correct counter as when this in uninstalled the counter category is removed. I can see other non custom counters correctly in perfmon I am running WIN2K3 SP2. Any issues or explanation f…

I am new to this posting. I hope this is the right place to ask this question. I have a standalone Windows XP Professional system. I am required to audit the access of the CD /DVD usage on this system. I have looked in the Group policy. I have looked at poperties of the device. I have dug around in the registry. Does anyone have an idea how to have the usage of the CD / DVD drive get logged to the security log in event viewer ( SecEvent.Evt). To be more specific, I need to know when a person writes information to the device. Although reads would be nice, the writing is what we are more concerned about.
