Hi, I posed some issues in another post, but there have been some changes. I have an Xtrastor external enclosure with 2 WD 500GB drives. I used to use a Fantom enclosure but wanted RAID1. The drives would not deted, no matter what. But, I updated the Jmicron drivers and now at least Vista detects the drive when I hook it up eSata. It always detected it using USB, but not eSATA. Problem is, it says it is only 8GB, regardless of connection type. Makes no sense to me.......why only 8GB??? Suggestionn anyone? I have an Asus PB5. I looked in the bios but could not find anything regardind eSATA or Jmicron drivers......does anyone know whaere it is hidd…

Call it paranoia - I set up the firewall to block all outbound traffic by default, and to allow traffic only if it meets a rule. I experimented with ping and tracert from the command prompt. Normally, they both don't work. When I create a rule to allow outbound ICMP traffic, they do work. That's what I expect. Now I change the rule. Instead of allowing outbound ICMP for -any program-, I change the program to C:\Windows\System32\PING.EXE , and I leave the ICMP part as it was. I expect that ping still works, but that tracert doesn't. However, neither ping nor tracert works. WHY? To state my question differently: is there a way to allow outbound ICMP for pi…

Good Morning, When I try to highlight a series of items such as emails in my Inbox so that I can delete multiple unwanted items, I typically selected the CTRL button and then multiple left mouse clicks to do the highlighting. In Vista (SP1), highlighting sometimes experiences long delays between clicks and can sometimes drop previously highlighted items. This same behavior occurs in other applications (e.g. Excel), not just email. I have a known working mouse that I am using. This also occurs if I use the laptop's touchpad. It happens offline as well as when I am connected (directly or wirelessly) online. Thank you in advance. -- Dave

I have a dedicated server on a rack with fasthosts running sql, mysql and access. My main database is access. I have just had a new section built to my site that uses sql. The problem is that ever now and then (sometimes twice a day sometimes twice a week) the site demands a username and password from new visitors. When I look at the server the permissions seem to have disappeared and I have to reapply permissions across the server. This is having serious consequences on my site which is regularly used. The problem has only started happening since I had the new site section built and sql installed. The sql is a shared version available though the hosts…

Hi, I am in an area that has a lot of service accounts such as Blackberry, and a lot of multi function printers that are setup with a AD username and password so that users scan documents and they appear in one of their mapped shares.. How can I secure these accounts as much as possible... I have seen various options such as stopping logging on etc, but does doing this stop these accounts from doing their job... For example, the log on locally option looks like a good bet, by denying logon locally for all the service accounts (Putting them in a group), would this prevent these accounts from accessing shares like the MFP's need to etc.. Wonder what …

Is it possible to change the actual desktop icon (which is visible at the top of the folder-tree in the windows explorer)..? I've tried to find registry-keys related to the actual desktop icon. I've tried to create a DesktopIcon key in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer but with no succes. I also tried to search in the HKEY_Classes_Root\ where I could change the control-panel icon, but I can't find anything related to the actual desktop icon... -- Redboost

We are living in a more complicated world for our PCs these days, it seems. I have laptop (HP Pav dv9500t): 1. with its own Altec-Lansing speakers and microphone built-in to the hood 2. an earphone jack I use regularly 3. and a Bluetooth-capable Jabra BT8010 stereo headset to which I pair 4. a Logitech webcam with microphone I am continually having trouble with the PC unable to switch to a sound device when it is detected and connected. For example, the bluetooth headset resists being connected for stereo audio service (it usually requires turning off then on the device again). Then when it is off or disconnected, the sound is not returned to ano…

There is about a 1-3 second delay before W2K's icons load on start or reboot. All icons load right away except for, My Documents, My Computer, My Network Places, Recycle Bin, and IE. Never had this problem before. I've had them all load slowly, but that was resolved with a simple defrag. Any ideas?

This blog post frames our approach in IE8 for delivering trustworthy browsing. The topic is complicated enough that some context and even history (before we go into any particular feature) is important, and so some readers may find this post a bit basic as it’s written for a wide audience. In previous posts here, we’ve written about IE8 for developers: the work in standards support, developer tools, script performance, and more. In future posts, we’ll write about IE8 for end-users (beyond the benefits of improved performance, activities, and Web Slices). This post starts a series about trustworthy browsing, a topic important for developers and end-users and everyone…

I can't copy from an XP share to a Vista SP1 laptop actually two different laptops. The limit seems to be 20 Meg for a wireless and around 100 Meg for a wired connection, almost as if there is a 'time out' on the copying time. The limit is reached whether it is one file or many files. When the limit is reached, any files below the limit will copy correctly. After the limit is reached, the 'Retry' window will popup. If 'Retry' is pressed, it will copy another limit's worth of files. The source XP system is in a windows Workgroup, XP Professional SP2 with the LinkLayer update for Vista added. The destination system is a brand new Vista Home Premium with S…

I have a blank desktop after the Vista loading screen that just shows the mouse cursor. I cannot ctrl+alt+del or anything unless I run "repair" off of the disc. Nothing there fixes my blank desktop problem nor does any F8 startup function when booting up my system. I can only bring up the task manager through the command prompt from the "repair" disc, but it doesn't show explorer.exe in the processes. I tried putting explorer.exe as a new task but this is the message I get: Windows cannot find 'explorer.exe'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. I also tried to put C:\windows\explorer.exe and I get this message: The ordinal 874 could…
