I was able to get a successful install of the subject framework. After about eight hours of frustration, I went part way with a possible route given by http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923100. First, I deleted .NET Framework 1.1 software via "Add & Remove" in Control Panel. I restarted the system and re-installed 1.1 with no difficulty. Second, I then tried to re-install SP 1 via Windows Update. It took me two separate occasions, but the basic 1.1 update took first. Finally, I again restarted and checked Windows Update again. I was presented with the Security Update for 1.1, SP 1 and it also installed without a hitch for me. How was that for dumb l…

I just finished setting up and installing programs in a new PC running windows XP. Something must have happened and the monitor screen went black. If I try to hit "reset" I can nothing seems to happen. I think the computer shuts down and restarts but the screen remains black The only way I can get the monitor to work (if it is the monitor) is to unplug the PC (when the screen is blank) and plug it back in. Once I have a screen and shut down normally using the start menu, the next time I try to start it up I get nothing but a black screen. I can't even tell if the PC is booting up or getting past the cmos boot up as the screen is black. I have tried a different…

I found that Supplemental Language Support (files for complex script and right-to-left languages, and files for East Asian languages) and Input Method Editors (IME) were causing problems on one laptop here, so I uninstalled them via Control Panel: Regional and Language Options: Languages: clear the check-boxes for those two options. But today I found that the laptop was having problems again, and I found that the Supplemental Language Support had been reinstalled! I don't know how that happened, but how can I block/prevent a future reinstallation? --John Hupp

Apologies if this has been discussed before, but I've only just joined this group. I have a problem on two different PCs running XP home with the latest patches and updates, but with quite different specifications and different software in daily use, by and large. On boot-up, XP runs as far as the splash screen. The progress indicator runs for a while and then XP locks up. The only thing that will clear it is turning off the power and re-starting. The machines then show the page offering to start from safe mode etc. - if I select start in normal mode, the machine takes the last good configuration and starts just fine. I've done this countless times, and…

I have some other problems associated with the screen blacking out after I've typed in my password on the welcome screen and entered it. It then brings me to my account, but if I don't start clicking on icons (I usually click on Mozilla Firefox) to get the computer going, the screen blacks out on me. Why does this happen? It's not a hibernation problem, I don't think, because I've set up the power options so that the computer hibernates after 15 min of idleness, but I haven't even been on the computer for 15 min, and the computer shuts off. The screen goes black, but the light bulb and battery meter lights are still on green. Another problem I have is that i…
