Windows installer, directory search, installs ?
by Guest Blue Angell- 0 replies

I'm asking this because Microsoft gave up on me, don't know why. I can't install Windows latest installer, hence I can't install anything that uses installer. When I need to look at my disk, ie: add image to print house etc, it takes forever to bring up the disk. Any game from Microsoft, FS 10, Combat 3, won't run now. Made a compilation disk of Win XP and SP2 and it won't boot on this computer but will on other computers. I'm at wits end and don't want to reinstall everything, please. Ideas anybody? Thanks

Sharing/Security Tab Missing?
by Guest Delbert- 0 replies

Hi there, I've got this weird error in one of my users in Windows XP Pro. For some reason when he is trying to share a folder - right click then properties, he's not seeing his "share/security" tab. All he can see are "General, WebShare, & Customize" tabs. I tried googling this and found a few forums about it but none had resolved the issue: http://www.computing.net/windowsxp/wwwboard/forum/160486.html I also configured his "simple sharing" under folder options but that didnt help. His pc is WinXP Pro SP2 in an NTFS format. He is definitely an admin of his local computer and the pc is a member of the domain - no GPO regarding disabling the sha…

Browsers automatically go back; new windows lose focus
by Guest IBM7094- 0 replies
Symptoms: 1. After a few seconds, browsers will return to the previously viewed page. Happens with IE, Firefox, and AOL's version of IE. 2. Outside of browsers, after opening a new window, focus will return to the previous window within one or two seconds. For example, clicking Start and then Control Panel, the Start button's menu will move to the front. Control Panel will still be open. I suspected problems with the mouse or keyboard, so I reverted the mouse driver to a generic one no difference (it's a Microsoft Optical). Unplugged the keyboard in case a physical key was stuck (backspace?) no change. XP Home, with McAfee, Spybot S&D, Spysweep…

Power settings for PCs, non-admin users
by Guest Eric Baines- 0 replies

We have about 2,000 users who mostly use terminal services/thin clients. However, we have about 200 PCs/laptops. I want to be able to force some/most of those PCs to have power settings that put them into Standby after 30 minutes of idle time. Can anyone help me do this? The problems that I seem to have are:- 1) the power settings seem to be a user based policy, not a machine based policy. Obviously, I have to avoid users putting a terminal server into Standby if they are idle! So this seems to prevent me applying a policy to specific machines. 2) Non-admin accounts can't set power settings. So this seems to prevent me putting anything into their logi…

Can't See My Counter Logs
by Guest mwebb- 0 replies
I like to run counter logs on my Win2003 servers. On two of my servers when I save the log settings and try to see the data using IE I get a security stop and IE will not open the htm file. It tells me to added the "site" to trusted sites. When I try that I get another error that tells me the site must be https. My other servers just give me a yellow bar warning but allow me to continue. How do I fix the servers that will not allow me to open the htm file with IE?

Vista stuck in Error Recovery Mode
by Guest Lord Vader III- 0 replies
Symantec found a virus on my machine and needed to reboot Vista to completely clean it. After Vista rebooted, the Vista login screen said I was in "Error Recovery Mode". After I logged in, it didn't run my network login script and I had to login to the network manually. Now it seems I cannot get out of Error Recovery Mode. Everytime I reboot or the screensaver comes up (password protected) the login screen says I am in Error Recovery Mode. How do I get Vista out of Error Recovery Mode?

Very slow 'Choose File' dialoge
by Guest Med- 0 replies

Hi, When I try to choose a file in 'File Open Dialogue' specially in IE7 or Firefox, to select a file (i.e. to select an image file to upload), it takes 40-50 seconds to show the list of files in the folder. Even when there are less than 10 small size files in those folders. It only happens the first time. Once I selected a file after waiting 40-50 second, it displys the file open dialogue instantly next time. But If PC goes on standby for a few hours, it happen again for the first file select. Does any one know why? My system details: Sony Laptop Vaio A-195 Centrino 1.5GHz, 1GB Ram Win XP Pro SP2 with latest patches. AVG Free V 7.5 Anti-virus …

Print button greyed out
by Guest Sandie- 0 replies
Hi. Having an issue where the print button becomes greyed out across all applications. The problem appears seemingly out of nowhere, regardless of printer type, driver, local or networked. You are then unable to delete or install a new printer until the PC is rebooted. Users are members of the administrator group but the accounts are restricted in some ways through a group policy rolled out via a sysprepped image. It seems to point to a rights issue but can't pinpoint it. Any suggestions?

Print Server Driver Uprade and Workstation upgrade
by Guest Jeff Ku- 0 replies
I am in need of upgrading the printer drivers for one of my HP printers. This printer is also deployed on workstations. If I change the printer driver on the server, it appears to disconnect the printers from the users. Is there a way to push the print driver updates down. I can delete the printer manually and re attach but this is not a realistic approach to go to each user and interrupt them to delete and create a printer. Thank you to anyone who can help.

I had to rebuild a system recently and after doing a standard install of XP on a new disk attached the old disk to copy over documents. The attached disk was the D: drive. The documents were located on one of the profiles desktop folder. I copies over 6 different documents folders into the administrators documents folder on the new disk. Ok I remove the old disk. Now I have my main C: Drive and a CD ROM drive D:. When I click on the copied folders in the admins documents folder up comes a message 'Please insert a disk in drive D:' This is the original location of the documents. Doing a properties on the entire folder reveals that the documents are there …
