OK I'm not experienced in admin - my background is software development - but I run a small business and do my own admin. I say this because a few times some quirky things happened a week ago (can't remember the details) but yesterday I had to install NTBACKUP utility twice (this is the special one from MS to allow restoration of NTBACKUPed files from W2003) as after the first time I installed it it would not run due to a missing DLL. Similarly over the last 3 days I have been trying to register MSSOAP30.DLL without success. I have tried everything - I posted a thread on this forum - a thread on Experts-Exchange - everything. I am going on holidays …

Thanks for the real important info. I have close to 100 videos of trips through Mexico and family videos that I have wanted to put on DVDs for a few years now and been unable to transfer them. All we could do is watch them on the tiny camera screen or plug the camera into a TV. I started out with XP X64 bit OS and then installed Vista Ultimate X64 bit. Sometimes I have to download a patch or an updated version of a driver but every single program, game, hardware, or whatever has always worked with both systems>>>>>EXCEPT SONY STUFF. All other companies make a driver or patch to make there products usable except Sony. With your advise I have…

Hi - I have a new high-spec notebook and am noticing a problem with Vista Ultimate related to screen refreshing. Whenever I modify characteristics of folders (eg. increase/decrease size), I have to right click > Refresh for changes to take place. This has recently started to happen on the desktop, where often after emptying the recycle bin it disappears. In this case I have to refresh the desktop for it to return. Shouldn't the refresh occur naturally at the programming level and is there something I can do about this? System Specs: Core 2 Duo T9500 2.6GHz // Vista Ultimate // 4GB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM // 256MB GeForce 8600M GT

Do any of you who are having the problem actually have SQLExpress installed? I get the service startup failure, but since SQL Express does not run on my machine (this is by choice - I deliberately installed SQL Server developer with a default instance BEFORE installing the VS 2005 - and now VS 2008) The SQL Express may come with VS2005 but I suspect it is possible that it doesn't install if you already have a default instance of SQL on your machine. Which, if you install SQL Developer, the chances are good that SQL Express is not installed. -- Regards, Jamie "Phyllisa" wrote: > I apologize, but do not know what a hotfix log is. I keep ge…

Every time I start Explorer it displays in a "default" window size even though the last time I used it I had resized it to almost full-screen. I think it used to "remember" the last setting, like most Windows apps, and come up in that setting. What happened? Did some Microsoft update alter a Registry setting just for Explorer? I really don't want to go through the hassle of trying to back out of 15 or 20 or so Windows Updates to find the culprit. Yeah, I'm lazy. I have switched to using Explorer 2 for this reason for now. Windows Explorer is mostly used for file deletions and other quick chnges but this postage stamp-sized default start window is …

Within the last day, my computer has booted with all my shortcuts grayed out on my desktop. This is also true for the panes of any windows that I open. Upon minimizing or closing these windows, my entire desktop, startup menu, basically everything becomes gray. It's responding slowly when this happens. My drivers are all up to date and I havn't installed anything recently that I think could make this happen. Help would be much appreciated.

Hi: I'm running WinXP Home Ed, SP3. My pc has its own CD Burning software (Roxio) and works fine. But for simple tasks, like storing a file in a CD/CDRW I like using windows built in burning capabilities (Send to->CD). It also works fine, but I have noted that when I add files to a CD that already has some files, the newly added files are stored but burning wizard ends with an error: An error occurred when burning CD, delete files, store for later, or expulse CD?. However files are correctly stored... I can add more files to the cd and again the same error, but files are OK. So what's happening?

We've a very strange problem in one of our server, i.e. NIC ordering in windows 2003 server always got changed automatically when we reboot the server. We want the NIC to be in one particular order for our application to work. Id set the order by doing the following but still it chages on the reboot How to change the binding order of network adapters 1. Click Start, click Run, type ncpa.cpl , and then click OK. You can see the available connections in the LAN and High-Speed Internet section of the Network Connections window. 2. On the Advanced menu, click Advanced Settings, and then click the Adapters and Bindings tab. http://sup…

I have several directories under my web root. These directories are tied to virtual dirs. All is well and there are no issues, however when I delete files within a certain directory (not withstanding that it is a virtual dir), the virtual dir display in mmc show a stop sign. AND, the dir security settings show that USERS has FC, no one else. If I then change the perms on this particular dir to inherit and prop al the way down, the stop sign disappears and the appropriate groups have the correct perms in the dialog. As suggested, there is no harm and everything seems to be fine. My question is, why do the permissions disappear and only the local US…
