I got a call from one client today who can't open My Documents. Error: "This file or directory is corrupt and unreadable." Another client yesterday had a problem that started with a serial label printer not being detected. While troubleshooting that I tried to run a System Restore to Friday. That failed. I ran a Safe Mode System Restore to Thursday and that succeeded, but it created a new user profile tree!! If the user's original profile folder was Hanna and the computer's name was DELL, then the new profile folder was Hanna.DELL. (The same behavior you would get if you were doing a fresh reinstallion of Windows without reformatting.) The old pr…

I am running the MAP Solution Accelerator to baseline a number of Server 2003 machines in terms of running them as VM's using Hyper-V on Server 2008. There is a rather intrusive status window having a cancel button showing the status. It is not minimizable. It appears that if I hit the cancel button, the assessment and logging stops altogether. Is that true? Since I plan on running this assessment for several weeks, isn't there a way to run this as a service so it persists between logon/logoff and server reboot cycles?

Here's a weird issue, we're setting user home drives in ADUC as \\k2\home$\user.name For most people this is working fine, and shows up in XP as 'user.name on \k2\home$'. Now, I have one user who is having a issue. That location isn't getting mapped correctly. Their folder is there, but their computer just shows '\k2', no home$. We've removed the mapping from ADUC, and put it back in, let it confirm that the folder is there and tried again, same thing. Odd thing is, this seems to be happening on only 1 computer. If I use his profile info on another computer, it works fine! How can we fix this on his machine?

People, I'm experimenting with using Server 2008 as a workstation. What I'd like is to get the behaviour of the desktop the same as Vista. I've got the Desktop experience, Vista Theme and Areo Glass working. However Vista also animates window minimises and restores anyone know how I turn that on? I'm also missing the sidebar but I don't think that it is in server installs so that isn't going to be easy. -- Anthony Jones - MVP ASP/ASP.NET

I was having problems with getting a program to prepare my backup external drive to be safely turned off (eSata - hot swap). So I disabled several Scheduled Tasks in the task scheduler such as consolidator and opin notific. Could you tell me what tasks should be scheduled in Windows Vista Ultimate task scheduler? And, do you happen to know of a good program that will make my eSata connection to my external hard drive hot swappable. The one I had problems with was HotSwap 4.1.1.0. Thank you.

I wanted to secure my account with a strong authentication, so i bought an Aladdin eToken pro and created a private key at it using MS Certification Authority built in 2008 Server. The problem is that vista doesn't see the key during logon process saying that "there is no valid key" on the smaty card. I was trying to secure my drive using that key so i tried to assign that key in "User accounts/Manage your file encryption certificates". Vista recognizes my certificate but in a final step, where probably Vista is trying to read a key contetnt, EFS REKEY wizard is freezing and i must to replug the token to make it visible and accessible again... What do I do…

Hello, I have developed an LSP (layered service provider) DLL and Window Service for url filtering. This DLL works fine with Vista Ultimate edition but when I use this DLL with Vista Business edition, on reboot Vista business edition stop responding for first 8 - 10 minutes and after that everything works fine. I registered this DLL and service on both Vista Ultimate and Vista Business by using run as administrator. What could be the reason of not responding on Windows Business. Regards, Manish Agarwal

When using Windows Vista's built-in Backup and Restore Center, is it possible to create multiple backup "scenarios"? Meaning, I want to backup different scenarios throughout each and every week: sometimes I want to backup the entire system I want another scenario to back up just one folder and yet another scenario to back up a set of folders that I use quite regularly. Is it possible to have multiple backup scenarios in place with this built-in backup program? In looking over the options (or the lack thereof), I'm guessing probably not. If not, would anyone care to recommend a free backup utility that would have this capability? I simply do not hav…
