I'm having a similar issue & had to turn off my updates as well. Suddenly was unable to connect to the internet... kept getting a message saying no connection was available. Dell had me do a system restore, but I kept having to restore to 8/6/08 every day in order to get online. The diagnostics I ran all recognized that I had a strong and active broadband connection. The correction that 'stagefright' wrote on 3/27 is too advanced... I don't understand it! Can anyone help? -- Alex "stagefright" wrote: > I've just gotten a new machine with Vista Home on it. Hello Mr. Murphy, We are in receipt of your complaint. Being that there are some cases of REAL (as opposed to IMAGINED) identity theft pending investigation in our files, your problem will have to wait until we get around to having the time to investigate anyone who uses another person's name - which is not illegal, BTW - in a Usenet newsgroup post. That time will probably never come. In the meantime, continue to make your implausible threats to whomever you please. Maybe they will be stupid enough to believe you. Respectfully (har-har), The High-Tech Crime Squad Mick Murphy wrote: >They are in the High-Tech Crime Squad. >Laugh when…

Another "feature" of Vista, unseen in W2000 and before: Formatting the partition on my CompactFlash card produces 6 reserved sectors, that means the boot sector (ok) and 5 additional sectors (bad). Microsoft Windows CE 2.0 hates every FAT system having more than the usual 1 reserved (boot) sector and only offers to format the card itself. This is my good old Casio A-20 handheld. So far ... the WinCE 2.0 writes only a minimally filled boot sector, no text like "FAT" in there. While Vista (and W2000) can access files on such a volume (partition), it is unable to check the file system because the check does not detect it as FAT. Excellent compatibility! Be…

In Vista, formatting a harddisk, CompactFlash card, USB memory stick or anything erases the whole partition by writing 0-bytes - unless you selected "Quick format". Older Windows, like 2000, read from the media (sent a verify command to driver) so you could still abort the operation as long as it was "checking" only. Same behavior for Explorer and "format" cmd. Did anybody notice this change? I found it after Vista zeroed not only the partition content but the whole CompactFlash card (that means Master Boot Record, too). But this total kill was not reproducable. Best Regards, Ralf -- A20_user Posted via http://www.vistaheads.com

The program Omnipage 16 crashes in msvcr80 and msvcp80. I've tried putting the latest versions of those programs in the c:\windows\system32 directory, but that does not work

When I have detail veiw selected, I go to View> Choose Details and select the details I want to be able to see, but no matter what I select (such as album title, artist, year, track number, etc) and click OK, it makes no difference. On the main folder at least the detail titles show up, but the details themselves don't, and for any subfolders, even the detail titles don't show up. All I'm able to see is Name, Type, Size and Date Modified. Thanks in advance for your help.
