As mentioned in the first post on this topic, the IE8 Smart Address Bar works better with Windows Search installed. However, IE8 does not require Windows Search, and IE8 will still provide a superior experience to IE7 if it’s not there. We are going to go through and detail the differences between IE8 with and without Windows Search so people can understand the trade-offs. To start with, we made a choice to use Windows Search as our index & query engine when we began work on IE8 almost two years ago. We could have written our own engine, or we could have used a different engine, but it came down to a simple realization: we have a team of people here at Microsof…

I've virtualized a w2003 for testing purposes (vmware server on debian on ibm x206). I noticed a gread performance loss, and I suspect this loss is related to disk virtualization. I'd like to do some performances test, but I'm not very experienced with perf. counters. Which counters should I activate? Is anywhere some good doc? tnx Ago

Auto-update finally had the sp1 update available for a 32 vista home premium installation. (gateway with a sigmatel sound card). Went through the update with 2 driver errors. One of the driver errors was the verizon vcast music manager driver. (It allows you to download songs to your verizon phone, in this case an lg env). The program runs, but can't play any music files listed before the sp1 update, even though these files are in the same hardrive location, says the files are not in the expected location. If you add new music files to the pc hardrive, vcast can find and then play those. Verizon answer was "this isn't our problem, but it's mic…

I just saw this in my computer. As I have just written, there is a problem on iTunes 8. However, Alisha commented she installed it without problems. Good for her, but until there is a quick patch installed, I would hold off from installing as I cannot afford to mess up my system.Share This More...

I use Word 2003 with XPPro, and use the language bar all the time. On Sept. 8 or so, we started having problems: 1) Does not load and has to be repopulated with my frequently used keyboards every time I start the computer 2) will only register the Unicode Keyboards that come with windows XP I have 2 alternative Hebrew keyboards and one alternative Greek Keyboard installed. Regional and Language options lets me select all of these, but when I apply and close the dialogue box, they do not appear on the language bar. Between Sept 1 and Sept 8, automatic updates added a slew of updates, including Service Pack 3 on Sept 1 we installed Kodak EasyShare 6.0…

We are using Windows Server 2003 and in the past couple of days the System process has been taking about 50% of the CPU. I am using a program called "Process Explorer" but can't nail down what is actually causing this. Prior the System process was only using about 5% of the CPU. There have been no addionational software or hardware changes recently. This is causing some network file sharing to be sluggish. Any help in pointing me in the right direction to try find the issue that is causing this would be appreciated.

I am trying to configure a Server 2008 Datacenter Core server to mount an iSCSI volume. The server has multiple NIC's, one of which is on the iSCSI VLAN. The server is in a workgroup and will be a Hyper-V host. On a separate Win 08 box with a full installation and domain membership I can mount the iSCSI volume no problem with Storage Explorer by entering the target portal address and logging into the right IQN. In addition, from that '08 box (or another Vista box that I have) I can fully remotely manage the Server Core box through a combination of firewall rules and local accounts (cmdkey /add). So, I know my problems are not permissions related. Aga…

An old post but thought I'd mention how I solved this as the process may help someone even if the fault is different. This was the error: "The server {204810B9-73B2-11D4-BF42-00B0D0118B56} did not register with DCOM within the required timeout." I searched the registry for the {...} reference and found the key: "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{204810b9-73b2-11d4-bf42-00b0d0118b56}" I searched for this and found Microsoft info explaining that it "registers the COM coclass for the UPnPRegistrar interface." (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms907987.aspx) I was lucky because the same info gave a sub-key which was missing from the registry. I created the s…

Add-ins cause problems with Mouse input in Word 2007 While using Microsoft Office 2007, Word started refusing mouse input. I found the following article: "[Word 2007] Mouse Doesn't Work (i.e. Can't Highlight Text)" and a common thread was observed add-ins cause problems. http://help.lockergnome.com/office/Word-2007-Mouse-Work-Highlight-Text-ftopict936907.html I found that two Adobe Acrobat add-ins were enabled on my own system. Hi, In my VSS requestor code, I am interested in knowing the Database files and log file volumes/files used by SQL database. Currently, we are using method, IVssWMComponent::GetComponentInfo to get the information about the SQL database component. But what we are seeing is cDatabases and cLogFiles values in VSS_COMPONENTINFO are zero. With these values being zero we are not calling methods, IVssWMComponent::GetDatabaseFile or IVssWMComponent::GetDatabaseLogFile With cFileCount I am able to get the list all all the files but not getting which are for database and which are for logs. And with SQL Server 2008, do not know which are for FileStream ? Is th…
