I try to follow this instruction: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/startmfu.htm ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Resolution Right-click an empty area in the Start menu and select Properties. In the Start Menu tab, click Customize. Configuration options for the Programs list are on the General tab. Make sure that the "Number of programs on Start" is not set to 0. At location A I use SJ4850. At location B I use SJ8250. I use the same laptop (HP Pavilion dv9000) at both locations. This system has worked well in the past. I’m now at location B. Suppose I scan a fully printed A4 sheet. I see an A4 image, but the printed sheet has been “pushed” to the right and upwards, lopping part of it off, while leaving corresponding blank space at the left and the bottom. Have tried reinstalling the HP drivers to no effect. The defect seems to be at the HP end as four different software scanning programs give the same result. Is there a way of regaining congruence? Is SJ8250 dying?

Brutal does not describe the XP File Transfer utility. I ran the utility on my XP machine to output all my settings to an external drive. I then installed a new laptop hard drive and re-installed the same version of XP with SP3. When I tried to run the utility I got the message that the Migration store was created with a previous version of files and settings. How am I supposed to go back and create the export with a different version of the utility. as an IT Software Developer I can't imagine how non IT people would feel about this brutally bad utility. This is beyond Frustrating. Fed up with non user friendly issues such as this! Whoever wrote that util…

Hi all, Just recently I have noticed that when viewing file properties for .sys files the 'details' tab contains very little information, as can be seen here with tcpip.sys: http://www.mikeyjames.com/psys.jpg It seems about 50/50 whether details from a .sys file will be interpreted properly by Vista. This was confirmed by using System Information: http://www.mikeyjames.com/sysinf.jpg I then noticed that a third party app (SiSoft Sandra) was able to read the info without any problems: http://www.mikeyjames.com/psandra.jpg I thought I'd try and see what effect changing the file extension had & changed it to tcpip.dll. This resulted in all the info…

Hello, I have a very strange issue with my Belgian azerty laptop keyboard. All dead keys, those are the keys used to place accents (¨ , ^ , ´ , ` , ~) above letters, are not working when I try to create a letter with an accent. However, when I keep the dead key pushed, after a second or so, an entire set of the dead key appears (e.g. ^^^^^^^^) after which I can type my character which will now have an accent above it (e.g. ^^^^^^^^ê). Of course, this is not a suitable solution. I know the keys are working (if I try to use the other non dead characters on the same key, they work immediately) and nothing is wrong with my keyboard. So I'm figuring it must be so…

TechRepublic is currently running a poll asking users whether their company is eventually migrating to Windows Vista and the choices are “Yes”, “No”, “Unsure”. I think Jason, who authored the poll should have included the option “Have Migrated” and that should have been my answer.Anyways, go ahead and vote in the poll here.Tags: Microsoft, Vista, [...] More...

Right I have a work laptop that connects to a domain. When I am at home and connect to the domain over the VPN I can access the fileshare on my laptop. When I bring the laptop home and connect to my home network I cannot access the fileshare - I get the error message above. I can see the machine in the Network Neighbourhood - I just cannot see any of the fileshares or connect to them in anyway. (This happens regardless of whether I shutdown the laptop at work or I leave it running when I bring it home). The strangest thing is this used to work (ie. I could do the above and see the fileshare and access it no problems at all). Now it does not. Wh…

I have a small network of 3 machines all running XP Pro. I installed SP3 on machines A and B I had it installed on Machine c but uninstalled it because of a conflict with a program that I need to run on a daily basis. I would also like to uninstall it from Machine B but when I do I am unable to get to the internet. Now for the real problem. Since attempting to uninistall and reinstall SP3 on Machine C the "Share" tab is gone from the Properties configuration window. How can I get the share tab back??

Hello, We created a service using SC.EXE for <gasp> Oracle Application Server ("opmnctl.exe startall"), and the service creates ok, but have noticed the following problems: (1) Service appears in the services applet, but the status always shows not running despite the actual process status (2) Attempting to start the service via the GUI returns "failed to start in a timely fashion" yet the service does indeed come up Is there anything we can do to correctly enumerate? Thanks!

We're trying to implement a custom userinit procedure in our network. The user MUST register his/her time-entry within a custom application (that we developed) just after the network authentication and before the logon procedure continue. Here's the sequence we're trying to achieve: 1. User authenticates in our domain providing his/her username and password 2. Gina calls Winlogon which in turn calls MYUSERINIT.EXE 3. MYUSERINIT prompts for a time-entry 4. User agrees clicking in a button 5. MYUSERINIT calls the DEFAULT USERINIT.EXE and ends 6. Logon continues. The issue is that, everytime we manually change the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \SOFTWARE\Microsoft\W…

I'm going to try and explain this as best as I can...I'm stumped and need some ideas. We have a marketing company who developed a presentation video for us. We used a personal website on an XP box to test the launching of the video and it worked fine - played audio and video and showed you the video controls (play, pause, stop, etc). We then attempted to apply the same code and files to our DEV and TEST webservers, both of which are running Windows 2003 R2 server. For whatever reason, the video will not play. Just a little black screen and it doesn't even show the video controls. We then applied the same code and files to a windows 2000 test box on a…
