Hi, I am running Windows XP Professional on a Dell Vostro 1500 laptop. Everything was running fine when I noticed that from a few days, my HDD spins down automatically every couple of minutes or less! I can hear the distinct sound, and can verify that from the load cycle count increase. My laptop is always plugged in. I checked that my power settings through Windows and Dell Quickset were both fine -- none allowed the Hard Drive to power down by itself in any state. The drive is not being overheated or anything, it just spins down and then starts back up immediately. I would like to disable this unreasonably frequent spin-down as it's useless and is wast…

Hello all, I have a client who is experiencing problems synchronizing a large amount of data (approx 60GB) from a network share using offline files (on Windows XP clients) - effectively the synchronization looks like it has completed, but when disconnecting the PC from the network the majority of the files are not there (and the files are indeed shown as not being synch'd in the Offline Files Folder). The files in question are predominantly word / excel Office documents (i.e. supported file types) so the problem appears to be size related. We have implemented a GPO on the Server (SBS 2003 Std) to ensure that both the 'Default Cache Size' on t…

I have seen this little issue on Vista and Windows 2008 and would like to know if others have seen it and might know a fix/workaround. I have a fresh install of either Vista or W2K8 on a PC and have joined a domain. The DC is also a W2K8 server. From the PC I open up explorer.exe and create a folder on the C: drive (c:\Temp for example). I add 3 or 4 files to the folder. Next using explorer.exe (detailed view) I delete one of the files. After it is deleted I hover my mouse over any of the remaining files. Nothing happens except maybe the file detail line is highlighted. OK so far. Now on the DC modify the 'Default Domain Policy' and enable the 'Turn…

We have recently upgraded a few dc's to windows 2008, whilst keeping some DCs at 2003. Mostly all member servers are 2003, however we have a few older nt4 machines with data on them. The nt4 servers were migrated years ago from the older domain structure into a single domain in active directory. All has been fine up until recently. The PDC emulator is on a windows 2008 DC now. When logging onto the affected nt4 server/s the user manager for domains shows the main domain, but when you look at local groups, the domain groups which are inside are showing as 'DOMAIN NAME\account unknown'. WINS and DNS entries are the same on all servers which exhibit this issue, …

Hi, Can anybody help with my problem? 6 days ago my reliability monitor stopped working - more precisely stopped displaying the graph/chart. I'm gettting the seemingly common text about corrupt data etc. I have spent since then trying to fix it. I have read all the forum advice I can find. No joy. I've backed up/emptied the PublishedData* & StateData folders as recommended, waited 24, then 48 hours..it still doesn't display. I've even copied the contents of my partner's folders into mine, this actually displays but (obviously) shows her reliability index...I rather hoped it would update with my errors 24 hours later (!)..it doesn't. *Published…
