You could easily change the descriptions in the type column in Window XP, but that ability was one of the things Vista left out for some reason. I read a post somewhere, which I wish I'd bookmarked because now I can't find it, which explained how to do it by editing the registry. -- mandolinface Posted via http://www.vistaheads.com

Hello All In Windows Vista Home Premium service pack 1, the volume control keeps disappearing from taskbar and the checkbox in the taskbar properties box to restore it is grayed out (along with the network icon box). I've tried doing this, per MS knowledge base article delete key: [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\TrayNotify] If also tried a reg fix someone posted to fix this. Either fix works for just one bootup. If I reboot, the icon is gone again. MS says a work around is to use the volume control in Control Panel. I'd be happen to add a shortcut to it to my quick launch. But I don…

Hi, Can anybody help with my problem? 6 days ago my reliability monitor stopped working - more precisely stopped displaying the graph/chart. I'm gettting the seemingly common text about corrupt data etc. I have spent since then trying to fix it. I have read all the forum advice I can find. No joy. I've backed up/emptied the PublishedData* & StateData folders as recommended, waited 24, then 48 hours..it still doesn't display. I've even copied the contents of my partner's folders into mine, this actually displays but (obviously) shows her reliability index...I rather hoped it would update with my errors 24 hours later (!)..it doesn't. *PublishedData…

I have my display set to "Windows Classic" with a 'teal' background. . . . . dull, I suppose, but I like it. But about once a week or so, when I turn the computer on, the display has changed to "Windows XP". This never occurred until about 6 months ago. Can anyone tell me what's it causing this, and/or how to fix it. I know how to RESET it--but I'd like to know the way to keep it from happening at all. Thank you for your help. Judy

Hi, After having worked in Firefox for a short time -and after some patch rounds of Vista- I started IE7 and had some problems. 1. I can start a search box with crtl+f, but the buttons are greyed out 2. ctrl+p does not work anymore. When I start Firefox after having tried in IE7, Firefox intercepts the printing call I made in IE7 and launches a Printing Dialog box 3. Submit buttons do not work anymore either 4. McAfee displays a blank screen of the security center 5. So do some websites Resetting IE7 to its security factory defaults does not help at all. I use Vista Ultimate with all the patches and updates. Kind regards, Tony Thijs Oriolus Publis…

So I have two VMs in VirtualPC. (But I don't think the fact that they're VMs matters.) On both of them - Windows 98 SE and Windows 95 - I installed NTLMv2, and tried to connect to my host PC (Windows XP Pro SP3). The problem: It only worked *once*. The first time I clicked on my host PC (inside the virtual PC's "Network Neighbourhood"), it opened - it showed all the shares, I could even browse them. Then I closed the window, and it stopped working. Now every time I try to open my host PC from the virtual one, it says: [X] \\THINK is not accessible. This device does not exist on the network. BUT the host PC says that the login was successful: -----B…

My motherboard has four (4) sata ports/connectors and one (1) ide conector. I can populate 3 of the 4 sata port with 2 HD's and 1 optical drive and the motherboard bios sees all three. I can also use the ide connector for another optical drive and it is recognized if I enable the jmicron driver in the bios. I have all of this installed on my computer. Running XP Pro already installed. When I log on to XP and go to "My Computer" the main HD show up and depending on how I have the sata ports configured the 2nd HD will show but the sata optical will not or the optical will show and the and the 2nd HD will not. If I enable the jmicron driver the ide optical…

Background: I had an SBS server fail to boot this week after the C: drive running out of disk space. Windows hopelessly corrupt, no amount of recovery console doing the trick. So, I reformatted C: and reinstalled Windows, including service packs, software, etc. I then tried to restore from ntbackup. This was unsuccessful with a kernel missing error. I booted to the SBS CD and reinstalled Windows to the C: drive without formatting. This installed a separate directory called WINDOWS0. I then attempted to restore with ntbackup again, and this time the restore was successful. Problem: We need all the disk space we can get on our C: partition sinc…

I am writing this letter to ALL Wireless Router manufacturers. I have a Linksys Wireless Router Model:BEFW11S4. It is 7 years (yes, count them, all of seven little years) old. I have visited the Linksys website numerous times trying to set up the WEP/WPA security on that wireless router (as all responsible wireless router owners should!). I found that there are no links to any wireless router setting websites that are congruent with the screen shots from Linksys' own self help technical support site. I have had to call Linksys several times to resolve this issue only to be placed on hold for lengthy times (sometimes my call was dropped and I had to st…
