I have an Imation usb drive that has been working flawlessly for almost a year and has never touched XP until recently. After plugging my usb drive in xp, all was good until I plugged it back into my Vista machine. The drive as became read-only. I then put the usb drive in XP and all was good. It seems as thou XP has changed something on my usb drive but I can't find it. I have tried command prompt in admin mode with attrib -r. I have tried changing different registry entries,-D and temporarily disabling the system manager to attempt to again access to this drive. But, to no avail. Also of note, this drive has no read-only switch. I have searched the …

I'm new to using Kerberos. But I have an existing client application that requires authentication by a server using Kerberos. It appears that I am getting a ticket correctly (at least what is returned looks good if I dump the memory). But I need to see if it works with the server end. Unhappily, the server is done and it will be some time before that group gets something running. What I need is to simulate the server (an HTTP server) to try and validate the ticket. Is it possible to set up a "server" with Kerberos and validate the ticket on the same PC the client is running on? What do I need to do that? Are there any good books or resources…

I have had the samee problem using, Windows Vista Home Premium 32bitand, I have yet to observe the reason why a fire wall should be turned off or To Turn a Firewall setting off. I had my hard drive formatted because I didd not understand this business with UAC and that in itself caused many problems. Being a novice although I've used computers for eons, things are getting very technical,. Guess I need to go back to school. Another problem I have had which caused me to have my HD Formatted is that, there were 3 instances of Live OneCare installed on the computer without my understanding my system is set up for a "work group / or home office. Didn't r…

Greetings, I’m Russ McRee of Microsoft’s Online Services Security & Compliance Incident Management team. My team serves as incident handlers for the various types of attacks our online services face. High on the list of incidents we handle are cross-site scripting attacks. There’s an unfortunate misconception surrounding cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks that result in them being perceived as less impactful than other types of attacks, and often more theoretical than practical. I believe this mindset increases inherent risk for Internet users. I wanted to share some statistics that show why I think the addition of the XSS Filter to Internet Explorer is so …

Lately, I have found Vista somewhat familiar. Clicking an icon under Word 2007 sometimes gives the circle going around - or whatever it is called - for a couple of seconds. This reminds me of the hourglass in previous versions of Windows.

This is a WEP issue, but remember that WPA uses a shared secret also. This is the kind of thing that makes it difficult to trust wireless setups. From bugtraq: "By default, the 40-bit WEP key for the wireless router provided by Verizon to FiOS (fiber optic) and possibly DSL customers is set to the last 40 bits of the router's 48-bit MAC address. This is significant because the router's MAC address (the MAC address of it's WAN-side ethernet port) is easily discoverable using kismet without even needing to know the WEP key."

We have a Netapps san that we use as a file share. We are migrating to another supposed trusted domain in our AD structure They will shut down our existing domain. Are there any tools that anyone is aware of that will map existing NTFS permissions either by user or groups and convert or add permissions for the new domain. I am sure there has to be some to help do this rather than me trying to go to our fileshare server and manually click on all folders and reset the permissions. This would take days. Thanks in advance, for any help!

I have the same issue.. For some reason, after trying to sync a network folder once, it seems impossible to remove it from systray. I killed mobsync.exe manually, even ran HijackThis to see whether or not it is in startup somewhere, but after a couple of minutes it just 'appears' again in my systray. Anyone a clue how to switch it off? Why isn't there an option in sync center? Why don't I have full control as an end-user? -- harrynak Posted via http://www.vistaheads.com
