I MIGHT of found the problem. This may not work on other systems. When the window shows saying the updates were not installed. Go to the internet options in the control panal and activate the connections tab. There will be a lan settings button. When you use that a lan settings box is shown. Make sure the auto detect, use automatic script, and proxy server are NOT activated. This might help. Probably not. > Hi I had the same issues and managed to fix it with the following. > > we did have a WSUS server until recently, won't go into details but will be > getting back online soon. the setting fro this were done by group policy, i > belei…

Hello, If you have disabled the hiding of operating system files, you will see what appear to be system folders with familiar names like "Documents and Settings" and "My Music". They are shown with a transparent icon and a shortcut arrow. These are not really folders and contain no data. They are only there to assist some old programs. Windows Vista has moved or renamed many familiar locations. The folder called "Documents and Settings" is called "Users" in Windows Vista. - JB "ITNews" wrote in message news:ur6pXTsLJHA.1156@TK2MSFTNGP05.phx.gbl... > As I was trying to browse got the following message: > > Documents and settings is no…

A user had some files on a Windows 2000 file server that they had set to deny access to everyone. To fix it, I took ownership of the folder and its contents. Although she had assured me she was out of the folder, she in fact had two files open. Those two files are no longer available to anyone. When I go into permissions, it tells me that I do not have access but that I can take ownership. When I go to the ownership tab, however, there is no edit button so I can take ownership. I tried restoring from backup but the permissions did not restore. Is there another way to take ownership of these two files? -- Bettie

I'm the Tech Director at a school and we use Windows 2003 Server to pass scripts to clients on login depending on user and location. Everything worked well for a year with clients but this year our 4th grade class has been having sporadic problems. The general 'share' folder that all users have always works for these users, but around 20% of the time their individual user mapped-drive does not show up. It is not dependent on machine or user but seems random. Most times the user can logout and log back in and it maps their network drive properly. I'm no script expert (the one we use was created by a consultant) but I would appreciate any help or suggestions that a…

Here I get the Only Administrator in Windows update too. I tried all kinds and even your exhaustive fix here http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=316524 I am logged in as Admistrator, in fact I am the Administrator for pete sake! I admit, it is not recommended to work in the XP Admin account, but I did... Windows Update works if I create a new user account but thats not the point... I want to be able to update from my Administrator account as its the one I'm using since a year now and haven't been able to update since... Surely there must be a fix? Help... I would like to perform unattended installation of XP. My question is that: Do I copy the WINNT.SIF onto I386 folder if I want to perform unattended with cd rather than floppy? Do I need to copy anything else apart from WINNT.SIF? How about unattended.txt file? Do I need to insert that too? I read on some forums that I need to copy WINNT.bat file onto I386 folder? is that case? thanks.

In Vista, Documents and Settings is not a folder and you cannot store anything in it. It is a junction point that serves only to send anything on to the proper folder User folder where such things are stored in Vista. I know it looks like a folder, but it is NOT. It is more like a shortcut, and by way of analogy, you know you cannot store anything in a shortcut. It is there so that older software that insists on encoding that XP location as a destination for it's information, will have it intercepted and directed to a proper Vista folder. Leave it alone! There is nothing in it, and you cannot put anything in it. There are similar folders, My Documents, M…

The IE Cumulative Security Update for October 2008 is now available via Windows Update. Alternatively, you can receive this and all other Microsoft updates via the new Microsoft Update. I encourage you to upgrade to Microsoft Update if you haven’t already to ensure that you receive the latest updates for all Microsoft products. This update addresses six vulnerabilities. The security update addresses these vulnerabilities by modifying the way that Internet Explorer handles the error resulting in the exploitable condition. For detailed information on the contents of this update, please see the following documentation: [*]Microsoft Security Bulletin MS08-058[*]Micro…

Summary: I need to know how to customize the taskbar icons in Vista business. Situation: We use an emulator here at my company. Sometimes the users need to have multiple instances of their emulator open at the same time. They perform different functions depending on which emulator window they are in. Within the program itself there is no way to setup the sessions so that they can easily differentiate between the two. (one screen this color and the other one a different color.) In XP the desktop icon titles would show on the taskbar. Such as "Emulator 1" and "Emulator 2". In Vista the task bar simply shows the icon from the actual program and no…
