In XP you used to be able to reset the NTFS permissions on a drive using using the secedit tool and the templates that MS provided. I can't see how to do this in Vista as there are no templates under c:\windows\security\templates any more and the defltbase.inf template in c:\windows\inf hardly touches any of the filesystem. If you actually look at the contents of defltbase.inf it does have a lot entries for filesystem security but most of them are commented out with a semi-colon. It's the commented out ones for %systemroot% and %systemdirectory% that I'm interested in though. Why would MS put these entries in simply to comment them out.? It's not as if you can…

With the “final†release of IE8 for Windows Vista and other versions of Windows in several languages, we’ve been focused on finishing IE8 in Windows 7. We’ll blog soon about the updates in IE8 in the Windows 7 Release Candidate around the Windows 7-specific features, like tabs in the taskbar, jump list, and touch. Today’s post is about reliability and telemetry. As in Win7, an important goal in IE8 was increasing reliability. For example, IE8 isolates crashing tabs from each other. If you’re listening to music in one tab, and the site you’re using in another tab crashes, IE8 isolates the crashed tab so the music doesn’t stop playing. We also pay very clo…

Hello, I have created a simple scheduled task to run an executable. I can manualy start this executable, but have to accept it through UAC. However, when run through the Task Scheduler (either manually or by a trigger), there appears to be something wrong. The executable does either not start or doesn't start with the appropriate rights. I've tried running as Administrator and as SYSTEM as well as with or without Highest privileges. Could someone please help me with this? Thanks!

As a follow-up to my prior blog post about Automatic Update/Windows Update distribution that began gradually in April, I want to provide an overview of the control users have over the installation and experience. First, to reiterate what I explained last month: when offered by Automatic Update, IE8 will not automatically install- the user has control over whether to upgrade to IE8. When offered IE8, three choices are offered: Ask later, install, or don’t install. If one chooses “Ask me later†then IE8 will continue to be offered via Automatic Update, and choosing “Don’t Install†will cause IE8 to no longer be offered via this method. Users who choose “Don
