Today when I booted I had the Windows Security Alert. It states that Windows Defender and Spyware Doctor are both turned off, and that's as it should be. I have BitDefender Internet Security 2009 and that indicates "No issue affects your computer." I ran that elevated command prompt to check the WMI and it says mine is consistent. So why, all of a sudden, did this Security Alert pop up?

I'm at my mom's place, and I can't access the internet on my Vista laptop. Her XP one works fine. I've seen that this is a common problem, but haven't seen a working solution. I tried a few of the regedit ones, such as disabling the IPv6, but that didn't work for me, and still showed the 6 running in my network settings. This is a direct connect too, not wireless. I figured I could get the IP info from her computer (subnet/gateway/ dns) and put that in mine for the automatic IP but that didn't even get hte initial local connection to work. I used her IP address, maybe that's the problem. Does anyone know of a solution that came out or how to find what IP…

I have found a reference to a concept called "reversible" passwords that is, instead of storing the hash of a password, an encryption of the passwordis stored instead. I have a client that has a need for this feature. The problem is that although there are references to it, there is no discussion about how one gets the password from the database where passwords are kept, and decrypts it. Please, I do NOT want a lengthy discussion about why reversible passwords are a Bad Idea, or why getting the plaintext of a password is a Bad Idea. I, and a client I have, *understand* these issues. If it helps, the context is a system service running on a physically secure…

I have seen this before If I visit www.puzzle.com with IE7, up comes a box saying it is installing Access 2000 SR-1. If I check Process I can see Windows Installer, msiexec, and it has spawned sub copies of itself. If I cancel the installation, it is persistent in that it comes up again to try and reinstall. IE7 is unrespnsive I dont think the installation of Access 2000 SR-1 is "hoax" (but it could be) but why cant I shut this undesireable behavior off in IE7? I have seen this before in several other websites, all of which think I need to install Access 2000 SR-1. Any background information on this?

A lot of people are annoyed by the User Access Control of Windows Vista especially with all those pop-ups here and there. Most people turn this feature off, but in case you want to keep this feature turned on, you can still minimize the pop-ups by making an application always run in Administrator mode.
