Everyone, In my office, I have one XP machine that is shared by two people i.e. there is one desktop, and two sets of monitors, keyboards, etc. Both individuals see the same screen on their individual monitors when any one person logs on. Someone in our office was playing around with the display settings and changed the original setting. Now, the monitors are on the standard split display i.e. now one screen is the primary and the other secondary. I have tried multiple things to fix this including making only one monitor the primary, changing the display to multiple monitors, resetting the cables and restarting the machine. However, nothing has wor…

I lost my hard drive but my critical data files were synched with briefcase to a memory stick. But when I try to copy the files from the briefcase on the memory stick to my new hard drive I get the message: "Sync copies cannot be created from 'my docs' because the folder itself already has a synch copy." When I right click on a file or folder in the breifcase there is no "Update All" option available any more. And there is nothing in properties that will let me change its status from being a "synch copy" to a regular file. I can open a briefcase file and save it to the new hard drive as a new file. But I would like to move all of the files in th…

If I click a button on a website that downloads and opens a word document, the word document flashes and does not open. I found that if I turn off UAC this does not happen. My preference would be to change a setting that will fix this and leave UAC on. Please help! Thanks! Scott

Intel and Microsoft, two best friend companies are working hand on hand on creating a personal computer that has magnificent battery life. This beast is called Wintel and Microsoft is powering it up with their next operating system, Windows 7, and Intel is running the computer with Westmere processors (32nm). Intel’s Westmere processors has not yet launched but it offers a lot of improvements in performance and power efficiency. Combining this processor with Windows 7 seems like a perfect machine from these two giants. The Wintel PC was recently introduced in San Franciso in front of reporters in preparation of it’s [...]Post from: Windows Vista Weblog More...

I have installed my Windows XP several times over the years for various reasons, virus, new computer, etc. and have never had the problem I have now. I have installed it on my current computer twice but I have this problem only this last time. The problem is an intermittent delay of 3-4 seconds when I click on Start & then again when I click on Turn Off Computer. By delay I mean that nothing happens for 3-4 seconds. By intermittent I mean that sometimes there is no delay or just a shorter delay. I have not been able to discern a pattern. I have not seen any delay anywhere else or anytime I use various programs. Does anyone have any ideas as to…

Tech newbie looking for some basic guidance. Am running Windows XP on a Dell Inspiron E1705. Noticed a problem when I tried to adjust the date and time to our new timezone: get a "run dll as an app" error message. Then noticed I can't open the display, system, or several other icons in the control panel. No error messages there, they just don't open. Same when I click on "properties" for just about anything. Have run Norton Antivirus, Spybot, and the Windows Live virus scans and they found nothing. Can't run the Windows Malware Tool because I get an error message with it too. Also tried doing a System Restore to a couple months ago, but still h…

Is there any resource that lists all the Windows Server 2003 (or all Windows OSes for that matter) Icons and thee meanings. The nothing more annoying than seeing some icon that you are not expecting but windows not telling you what it means. One in particular is bugging me - it's a share icon but it's different from the normal one. It has a folder with the hand at the bottom holding it but the folder also has a white document peeking out from it. I've been all over google looking for icon info but I can't find anything that explains their meanings.

We noticed midi sounds weren't playing and my volume icon is gone from the taskbar. I went into control panel and under sounds, audio tab under midi music playback nothing was selected, so I selected SoundMAX and press apply, but when I leave and come back, its gone back to nothing selected. I checked device manager and all the sound devices are supposed running ok, are any of these not needed: Audio Codecs Legacy Audio Drivers Legacy Video Capture Devices Media Control Devices SoundMAX Video Codecs So I uninstalled and reinstalled SoundMAX but still can't select the midi playback device. So I bought a Creative Soundblaster card, uninstalled Sou…

I can not connect to my wireless network with a particular computer. Other computers connect just fine so I do not believe it is a network or router problem. When I click on View Available Wireless Networks and highlight my router, the display box in the top left tells me that I am not connected but in the text below tells me that I am currently connected so there seems to be some ambiguity about the situation. Concurrently with this problem, I have noticed something called Software Distribution Service 3.0 listed on the calendar when I try to restore settings. Automatic updates is turned off but the Software Distribution Service 3.0 still seems to show up every week …

Hello all. I need your kind help in helping a friend who is across the country. I do not have Vista in my computer, so helping her has become somewhat difficult. She bought the computer a few months ago and started to tinker with Vista to become more familiar with it. Somehow she got into the user accounts, created 3 more accounts and accidentally set the parental controls. She now cannot visit some web sites because of this block. When she went back to the Parental Controls, she could not get in because Vista told her that she needed Administrator privileges. I told her to login as Admin and fix that, but she did not have the Admin account v…
