If you are still in Windows XP or Windows Vista, you might be thinking how long it takes to upgrade from your Windows box to Windows 7. Don’t get carried away with all the of reports saying that the upgrade is a breeze and simple enough. I do agree it should be a simple process, that is if you are upgrading from a Windows Vista fresh installation to a Windows 7 fresh installation. There are so many things you need to do to prepare for an upgrade and the following are items you should consider: 1. File backups – [...]Post from: Windows Vista Weblog More...

They both essentially boil down to executing some FOR commands that look similar to this: for /f "tokens=4 usebackq" %%a in ('a b c d e f g h') do echo %%a According to the docs, that command should produce the command "echo d", which should in turn echo the d character to the screen. In fact that does happen. However, quite oft…

Just purchased new server, as well as WS 2008 Standard 64 bit, with external LTO tape drive. R2 is already available for download from MS eOpen Vol License site, so elected to use it rather than install WS 2008 SP2 and perform in-place upgrade later. All of the new product info on Windows Server 2008 on the MS web site relates to R2, so expected critical third party software to be compatible by time MS released the OS version. Backup Exec 12.5 was thought to support R2 by the hardware vendor, but didn't function after installation other than recognizing the tape drive, allowing erase jobs, but unable to perform backups. Symantec tech support indicate…

I have not been able to get flashplayer working in Vista or Firefox and here is what fixed it for me. In IE 8 I went to Tools and clicked Manage Addons and found adobe "disabled" for some dumb reason so I enabled it and as simple as that it now works.... In Firefox I redownloaded the program (note: pay attention to the download process because in Firefox you probably will have to "enable" the download by clicking on an enable button on the screen during the process to make sure you get the download.) Hope this helps a few people style_emoticons//smile.gif -- wrangle09 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ wrangl…

Hi, I notice that vista has made some shortcut folders as placeholders for previous XP folders. For instance: C:/Application Data If I look at the properties for that shortcut, it is type folder with no target. That all makes sense. But I see another shortcut at: C:/ProgramData/Application Data That shortcut is type folder, but it has a target of "C:/Program Data" And, when opening that shortcut you get into an endless loop. :-( And causes my script to endlessly drill down. This is a 1 month old vista home laptop. I believe it should be a shortcut with type folder and no target. Is that correct? If so, how would I create such a shortcut? I suppose I …

Hi -- I have a user who accesses a Windows 2003 Terminal Server using a login that launches her directly into the application she uses without ever showing her a desktop. When she exits from this app, she is automatically logged out. She is having occasional problems printing to a printer that is local to the Terminal Server. Most of the time she can print to this printer without any problem. Occasionally, though, a print job will get stuck in there, and then all her subsequent print jobs just stack in the queue. The quick solution to this problem is to open up the print queue and delete the stuck print job. But she has no desktop ... Is there any …

I have a a Windows Datacenter 2008 R2 Server configured with 4 nodes, each with 8 six core processors for a total of 98 cores. I am running into a whole mess of performance problems so serve that a basic 8 core server with 12 GB of memory is running twice as fast. By default, when a server has more then 64 cores, it assigns them evenly into groups with a max of 64 CPU per group. So in my case I have 2 CPU groups with 48 CPUs each. Now the problem I am running into is that window OS applications, like perfmon that will only see the CPU assigned to group 0. In this case , I want to use perfmon to monitor all the cpu, but it will only show be the first …

I was following instructions given to me in microsoft.public.windowsexplorer.general in the "Blocked from a Website" posting. All instructions there worked fine. But when I entered the kb2.adobe.com URL, after being sure I was "running without addons," it waited for a while and then showed a dialogue box that said: "Could not retrieve a valid progID of Class: MSXML2XSLTemplate 3.0. (original exception undefined)" The site did open, however. And everything proceeded without further incident. I'm wondering is this be related to another set of problems I've had/am having? Might it be a clue? I was asked to use www.windowsupdate.com to uninstall M…
