Hi I have 2 machines one with vista home premium and the other with vista ultimate that I need to network to a WIN2000 server. When I try to map the network drive, vista insists on putting the computer name in front of the username, and so I am refused log-on. I have tried set a login credential username/password in vista ultimate (home version wont let me do this). The credential is accepted, but when I try to map the network drive vista STILL adds the computer name. PLESE PLEASE can someone tell me how to stop this so that I can log onto my server? Why does progress always make things worse? Ths a million H…

My Windows XP Pro laptop auto-installed updates last night on shutdown (Wed Apr 15). On startup this morning, the system refuses my passwords and I cannot log on. Refuses both user password for domain and administrator password for the local machine. Anyone else having this trouble? Any suggestions for recovery?

Hello there Steve, To fix this problem permanently you will need to install kaspersky antivirus for the 30 day trial period, at first you wont be able to install as trial so choose to activate later, after you've succesfully installed kaspersky, download malwarebytes and install it as well. After you do that, scan your computer with malwarebytes he will find 4 viruses and a few bad registry logs, try to fix them with your initial antivurus (symantec, microsoft security essentials or even with the kaspersky you installed recently). Then try to update your kaspersky, it should get stuck at 90% and he will find a few viruses as well, delete or…

[Crossposted to internetexplorer.general] Well... we really need to know the version of Internet Explorer. Go to IE> Help> About for version information. You may have to enable the Menu Bar or use the Alt key to temporarily display the Menu Bar in order to access "Help." Which version of Windows? (Including SP level- e.g. Windows 7, Vista SP1, XP SP2 , 32-bit, 64-bit, etc. Right-click Computer/My Computer> Properties to obtain this information) 32-bit or 64-bit Operating System? That's displayed with the Windows version information. Don [MS MVP- IE] "beck" wrote in message news:26C25341-1BAB-4384-86…

I am taking a computer class and for an assignment I had to find a newsgroup and post about a Vista feature I like. Now that I know what the sidebar does, I like it. I always ignored it on the desktop because I couldn't figure out what the use of it was. Now that I realize you can add news features on it, I enjoy it more. -- Tab1534

Today Serveral systems running Word 2007 no longer would are able to Save documents. I receive the error " There has been a network or file permission error. The network connection may be lost. (\\servernane\filename.docx)" There was a knowledgebase reference to this error : Q291156. This did not resolve the issue. Also, this just started. I noticed there were updates applied from automatic updates for MS word 2007 for April 14, 2007 . When reverting back using system restore, Word 2007 then saves properly without any errors. We are using Word 2007 on XP systems with a NT 4.0 Server SP6 . I need to resolve this issue or I will n…

I recently downloaded updates to IE8 and XP at the same time. Before the update my system response (loading IE, etc) took 2 to 5 sec. Immediately after the updates response went to 20 - 60 sec. MS takes the position that I should pay them to fix what their updates damaged. Can anyone tell me how to regain my previous performance without paying MS? Thanks

I have a Word 2007 document that inserts several Excel and Word documents. When I open it, and select the option to update the linked files, everything appears to work OK, but I get an error message saying some links could not be found, so that content was not updated. I need some way to find all the links, so I can remove any extraneous ones, and get rid of this error message. Can anyone help with this? -- Chuck

Is there some way to open up the task manager to a specific application? I need to programmatically adjust a particular application priority and affinity. I can do it with a script if that application can be programmatically highlighted when task manager is opened. The problem is trying to get that application highlighted. My current method is to arrange by memory usage and move to the top of the list, since the application uses a lot of memory. But it does not always use the most memory. I could move to the top of the list and then press the first letter (key) of that application, but usually it does use the most memory, so that will put me…

I used to use TweakUI to hide a drive containing some personal information. All of a sudden the drive is now showing in Windows Explorer. I've tried uninstalling it and reinstalling it and that didn't help. I also tried to hide it using the Registry Editor and adding a new DWORD "NoDrives" but that didn't work either. There was already one there, I assume from TweakUI so I deleted it and created a new one but the drive is still showing. What could have caused TweakUI to suddenly stop working? I had some weird issues with my BIOS, but shouldn't TweakUI still work?

If you had the foresight to enable automatic creation of back-up files on save then yes, you probably can get back (most) of a deleted file. Otherwise you are in very dodgy territory. Shift Delete is specifically intended to _not_ keep files you delete. You may not have dropped it in the shredder, but getting anything back isn't going to be easy. There are third party tools that attempt to recover deleted files fro…
