Yes, we're a few days into May, but I've just posted the April edition of my monthly Microsoft CodeTracker for download. There are a few new additions to this month's tracker, plus a whole lot of updates and revisions for the tens of Microsoft products and technologies on which I'm keeping tabs, via their codenames. Microsoft researchers are developing a new collaborative mobile-phone application codenamed "Newport" that is designed to facilitate the sharing of content (like photos and notes), as well as location, during phone calls. It seems there was another Microsoft Research project codenamed "Courier" (but not the Courier tablet) that may be a precursor to Newport. More...

Microsoft "Menlo" is a hush-hush research project that is focused on replacing Windows Compact Edition (CE) with Windows NT, according to my sources. "Experiment 19" is a graphics platform researchers are building to complement Menlo, my sources have told me. I don't have a lot of details about these Research efforts beyond that -- so far, that is.... More...

This week, the Yahoos said Yahoo's goal is to complete the transition of its U.S. and Canadian ad customers to Microsoft adCenter "before the start of the 2010 holiday season." However, if it looks like "we cannot transition with quality before the holiday period, we'll defer the transition until the early part of 2011," a Yahoo blog post noted. More...

I searched and searched, and finally found the answer to Vista not seeing XP shared folders and vice-versa, even XP to XP in some cases. It's on the XP machine, and it has to do with File Permissions. I know this sounds stupid, but I tried EVERY trick that was out there (changing Vista's Lan Manager back to v1, making the same user on each machine, etc.) but this worked b-e-a-utifully for me. It's all about WHO owns (not just has the rights to) the folders/partition. I was silly and changed my user name months ago, which threw XP into a "hidden tizzy." when I added a new Vista machine to the works, the problem surfaced BIG TIME. Solut…

What is Happening? This message is to inform you that Microsoft will soon begin discontinuing newsgroups and transitioning users to Microsoft forums. Why? As you may know, newsgroups have existed for many years now however, the traffic in the Microsoft newsgroups has been steadily decreasing for the past several years while customers and participants are increasingly finding solutions in the forums on Microsoft properties and third party sites. This move will unify the customer experience, centralize content, make it easier for active contributors to retain their influence, mitigate redundancies and make the content easier to find by cus…

I have been trying to set up a Linksys DMA2100 Media Extender on my Windows 7 Home Premium system. The Extender is wired to my ATT 2 wire modem/router. When I enter the 8 digit code into Media Center I receive the error “cannot set up Extenderâ€. If I go to Network Sharing Center> see full map the extender is there. I have disabled windows firewall and connected the extender to my computer in order to bypass the ATT Router with the same negative results. I am at a loss, Linksys Tech. Support’s answer was to install Vista :-( Any help would be appreciated.
