Code 38 When Inserting USB FD
by Guest LHIM- 0 replies
About 50% of the time when I insert a USB FD, the system make a noise (the clunky sound when a USB device is inserted) but then doesn't recognize the drive. If I pursue troubleshooting I get the "an instance of the device driver is already in memory" (Code 38). I am using WinXP Prof SP3. I ALWAYS remove a USB FD by using the eject process. And the problem can occur with any of several FDs or my external DVD burner. Further pursuit leads to "reboot your system". Even the KB for this http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310123 suggests the same fix. I don't know about everyone else, but isn't it ridiculous to reboot for this issue? We all …

Unable to open, operation aborted

Hello CKusma, Just an FYI for you. It is always best to check with the software manufacturer FIRST. They will tell you if they have tested the product and the version, as well as whether or not it will work with Windows 7. Check out the Windows 7 Compatibility site: (There you will find out about hardware and software compatibility.) 'Windows 7 Compatibility: Resources for PCs, Devices and Software Programs' (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/compatibility/en-us/default.aspx) There is a pulldown from which you can choose "hardware" and "software". There are also some great articles, instructional videos and such to help wi…

Windows Doesn't Recognize Media Correctly
by Guest JuliusPIV- 0 replies
I have a situation where a Windows XP SP3 machine will not correctly recognize or rather, correctly acknowledge that media has been inserted. When I say 'burn' or talk about writing to a CD, I'm using the built-in burning features/capabilities of Windows XP, not a third party application/tool. If I boot the machine without a CD in it and check My Computer, the CD drive icon looks like a normal drive without any media inserted. If I insert a blank cd-r/rw, the drive icon doesn't change, and when I attempt to burn, Windows believes the drive is empty. Although the 'Write these files to CD' option is present, when we try to complete the proces…

Can't delete fonts
by Guest LarryBrown- 0 replies

Yes you can delete the fonts. No, you don't have to live with a bunch of garbage fonts. The "file is open by another program" is wrong and misleading. The Chinese, Korean, Japanese and other whacky fonts are not locked by the system, nor required for the system to operate. ------first give yourself ownership and full control of the font file(s):------------- -----using the command line------ - Click start - Type: "cmd" in the search box. It will find cmd.exe with a black box icon up at the top of the search window. - Right-click cmd.exe and click Run As Administrator - cd to c:\windows\fonts or whatever folder has your fonts. - T…

Spontaneous Character Change
by Guest roiHunter- 0 replies
I have had a problem with the special characters spontaneously changing on my keyboard. This has happened in Word, WordPad and Internet Explorer (probably more programs, but I haven't checked more yet). The characters I am talking about are: `~[{]}\|,/?. that show up as: /\^¨çÇàÀ,’.â€ÂéÉ. All other characters appear normal. They will stay remapped until spontaneously they change back usually after quiting the program and going back to them later. Right now, the characters in WordPad are changed, but not in this message and not in Word. I have tried the language setting in regional settings and it shows English …

MODI and highlighting
by Guest Frank Perry- 0 replies

Howdy, I have tiff documents and I would like to highlight selected text in the image under software (C++) control. I can: OCR the document. Get the individual images and layout for each page. I can get each word and a rectangle for that word. My problem is I don't see a way to mark up the page using the rectangle information. Something as simple as drawing a new rectangle in a color would do. It would be better to perform some sort of AND of the pixels to turn white into a color but I can live without it. Any ideas? -- Frank Perry LavaLeaf Software

Table of Contents Link
by Guest Bill Gruener- 0 replies

If I understand the question, Word should create the hyperlink automatically. When the ToC is viewed in a Word document, the reader presses Ctrl+Left Mouse. The selected entry displays. If you create a PDF, the ToC appears as bookmarks, and you can select the desired section from the list of bookmarks. Does that help -- CSC "Granpoh" wrote: > I created a table of contents at the top of one of my documents. when you run the microsoft online scanner it will then provide a listing of results. if you look carefully at the listing you will see small drop down arrows these will expand the line items and show you additional details. however, if you are seeking a method to do a before and after a registry cleaner has been executed, I believe you will not find a convenient method to do this. -- db·´¯`·...¸> DatabaseBen, Retired Professional - Systems Analyst - Database Developer - Accountancy - Veteran of the Armed Forces - Microsoft Partner - @hotmail.com ~~~~~…

Need Help Understanding Registry Permissions on HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT and CLSID
by Guest undisclosed- 0 replies
Thank you, thank you. I did something similar on a Windows 2003 Terminal Server - actually, added permissions for "Users" to have read/enumerate permissions on HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID (using "advanced") and after a reboot had the same results - user would authenticate but fail to launch explorer.exe I was able to use Sysinternals psexec to launch a command prompt in the user session: psexec \\myserver -i cmd.exe From here, I opened regedit and added "Authenticated User" to CLSID using the basic interface, with read permissions. After a restart, all was well. -- jeffgreenca
