By Thurrott, Paul When it comes to Windows Phone, Microsoft is in a bit of a bind. On the one hand, the software giant has created an innovative and useful mobile platform that offers important improvements over the Android and iPhone competition. But on the other hand, no one seems to be buying the phones. Source: Win Super Site

By Thurrott, Paul Netflix this week did something that only a very confident and successful company could possibly do: It raised prices for a popular service that, quite frankly, should simply cost consumers less over time, not more. Similar in that way to last year’s Xbox LIVE price hike, the Netflix price hike is seen, perhaps correctly, as a blatant money grab for a captive audience. Source: Win Super Site

By Thurrott, Paul Windows Server 2003 is notable to me for two reasons. First, it was among those products that were temporarily renamed to include the ".NET" nomenclature that briefly subsumed the software giant in late 2001/early 2002. Second, the successor to Windows Server 2003 was delayed for several years because of problems with the Longhorn generation of Windows, necessitating further updates. Source: Win Super Site

Bulletin Severity Rating:Important - This security update resolves a publicly disclosed vulnerability in Microsoft Visio. The vulnerability could allow remote code execution if a user opens a legitimate Visio file that is located in the same network directory as a specially crafted library file. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could gain the same user rights as the logged-on user. Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be less impacted than users who operate with administrative user rights. Read Bulletin

By Thurrott, Paul At its annual Worldwide Partner Conference (WPC), held this week in Los Angeles, California, Microsoft provided a number of interesting updates related to Windows. The most interesting, I think, is the public beta release of Windows Intune 2, a major update to the cloud-based PC management service that Microsoft launched earlier this year. By Thurrott, Paul I never had a a happy relationship with Windows Mobile. Aand when the iPhone came out in 2007, I jumped shipped immediately, again seeking out a superior competing product. Microsoft tried to win me back over subsequent releases of Windows Mobile 6, 6.1, and 6.5, but by then the platform was doomed. Only Microsoft didn’t seem to know it. Source: Win Super Site

By Thurrott, Paul Although Apple has thus far avoided the antitrust anvil, the Cupertino company is discovering an unhappy dark side to its market power. Sure, it can bully rivals in public, but when those spats hit the legal system, Apple often finds itself on the wrong end of the law. Source: Win Super Site
