By Paul Thurrott One of my favorite legal ploys is "prior use": Some company is suing another company for violating a patent (or whatever) that they own, and then--BAM!--the defending company pulls an ace out of its sleeve and comes up with an example of prior use, proving that the suing company doesn’t even own the technology in question. The case is thrown out of court, the crowd goes wild. Source: Win Super Site

By Paul Thurrott When Google launched its copycat Google+ service earlier this summer, I figured it was only a matter of time before its, um, inspiration--Facebook--moved to erase the few advantages Google’s service brought to the game. And this week, the social networking giant did just that, making it easier for users to determine who they are sharing information with on the fly. You know, just like Google+ does. By Paul Thurrott Live from Petaluma: I appeared on the TWiT podcast this week with Leo, Peter Rojas, Baratunde Thurston, and Nick Bilton and discussed HP’s webOS and PC business strategy change, Microsoft’s play for webOS developers, Windows 8, Google and Motorola and Android patents, and more. By Paul Thurrott To say that this week’s news about Skype buying GroupMe raised a few eyebrows is, of course, an understatement. After all, Skype itself is the target of an acquisition, thanks to a mammoth $8.5 billion bid from Microsoft that’s awaited the expected regulatory OK. So why is Skype making this move? By Paul Thurrott It was the biggest tech news of the year so far, but last week’s revelations by Hewlett-Packard about its PC and mobile OS businesses was so badly bungled by the computing giant that we all got the wrong message. The net effect, of course, is that HP has accomplished what it never intended: It has killed any future for its webOS mobile system. And it has possibly mortally wounded its thus-far dominant PC business as well. Source: Win Super Site
