By Paul Thurrott Late last week, the US Department of Justice announced that Google has agreed to forfeit $500 million in profits from advertisements for Canadian pharmacies that targeted consumers in the United States. But the DOJ’s criminal investigation also uncovered some unsavory information about the online giant’s CEO, Larry Page: Apparently, Page knew about the illegal ads years ago and did nothing to stop it. By Paul Thurrott In the latest episode of the Windows Weekly podcast, Leo, Mary Jo and I discuss Paul’s visit to Petaluma, an anniversary for Windows 95 and Windows XP, how HP killed webOS and mortally wounded its PC business through miscommunication, Microsoft’s bid for webOS developers, a plan for Amazon, Windows Phone Mango and Tango news, Skype’s purchase of GroupMe, and some Windows 8 tidbits ahead of BUILD. By Paul Thurrott Just a heads-up for the partisan bloggers a Wired: If the term "post-PC era" isn’t spin, then neither is "PC Plus era". Both terms come from the school of "when you make hammers, everything looks like a nail." Source: Win Super Site

By Paul Thurrott Rarely do Microsoft appearances at TechEd New Zealand generate this much excitement. But this week, when Microsoft principal architect Patrick Hevesi carted out a prototype quad core tablet aimed at next year’s release of Windows 8, the rumor mill went into overdrive. Here’s what’s really happening. Source: Win Super Site

By Paul Thurrott I’ve been lying to you. In my defense, it was the "good" kind of lie, where I was trying to prevent hurting your feelings. But I’m tired of it. And now I’m just going to tell you what I should have told you all along. And that’s this: When it comes to PCs, tablets, smart phones, whatever market share matters. In fact, it matters more than any other metric you care to name. Source: Win Super Site

Our previous post about the new copy experience in Windows 8 generated a lot of questions and comments about the new “Choose Files” dialog for resolving file name collisions. Based on the level of interest, we thought it would be fun to share some of the design iterations and our usability testing that led us to this design. In the implemented design, there are two levels of control when acting on file name collisions (or “conflicts”). The primary experience is a simplified, one-click, bulk management of all conflicts, offering “Replace all” or “Skip all.” We call this the “Simple Conflict Resolution dialog.” There is also an option to enter the secondary experience whi…

There are reports that Microsoft is about to hand out an ultra-portable computer running Windows 8 and containing a quad-core processor. If true, it could serve as a very effective way of promoting the new system on portable devices. The rumors center on BUILD, a Microsoft event that takes place in California in September designed to help both hardware and software developers work better with Windows. The event also serves as a source of feedback for Microsoft about how it could improve the operating system (OS), including those still in development. This year's event is going to be built around Windows 8, which appears to be around 12 months from its public release…

By Paul Thurrott This week, Microsoft’s Steven Sinofsky issued another lengthy Building Windows 8 blog post in which he described upcoming changes to file management operations in Windows 8. But an accompanying video actually reveals a few other interesting Explorer tidbits, so I’m rolling up my sleeves and getting back to work. Source: Win Super Site

By Paul Thurrott An often irreverent look at some of this week’s other news, including a few more thoughts about Steve Jobs, a confirmation of two Windows Phone Mango features we already knew about, Windows Phone Tango is real, whether Microsoft should buy Nokia, Microsoft’s threat to game publishers, a temporary (and very limited) Xbox 360 price cut, RIM’s silly new music service, and an Amazing Facebook stat.
