Plugging in that USB stick you found lying around on the street outside your office could lead to a security breach. This is no secret, of course. We have all (hopefully) been aware of the dangers of inserting an unknown USB device into our computers for some time. Heck, the technique has even made it into the Mr Robot TV series. But what may not be widely known is just how successful the tactic can be for allowing hackers to compromise your computer systems. Research presented this week at BlackHat by Elie Bursztein of Google’s anti-abuse research team shows that the danger is alarmingly real: …we dropped nearly 300 USB sticks on the University of Illinois Ur…

It’s not often that we see a perfect crime ouroboros, but when we do, it just feels like some kind of cosmic joke. To wit: two people were arrested this week for trying to sell stolen video game consoles and some other stuff back to the guy they’re accused of stealing them from. Police in Clarksville, TN said on Facebook that a man and woman visited a local pawn store with a few things to sell on Tuesday (via The Leaf Chronicle), including two PlayStation consoles. The store’s owner realized that some of that stuff looked awfully familiar, and decided to head home to check on his belongings. You know, just in case. Lo and behold, upon arriving home he found someone …

Have you gone on a bad date recently? Maybe he had food in his teeth the whole time, or perhaps she wouldn’t stop talking about her Precious Moments collections. It could’ve been worse, though. Your date could’ve ordered a bunch of food and drinks at a pricey steakhouse and then fled, leaving you with the bill. That’s what happened to a Los Angeles area woman who said she was faced with a $163 dinner bill after her online date dined and then, well, dashed. And it seems like this isn’t the first time he’s pulled that move. She told CBS L.A. that he’d sent her a flattering message on dating site Plenty of Fish. After a few exchanges, they decided to meet a steakhouse …

Project Emoji: The complete redesign
by Guest Danielle McClune- 0 replies

The world loves emoji. What a strange phenomenon, right? They’re a whole new language. Descriptive metaphors packed into magical little glyphs. This week, the Windows 10 Anniversary Update delivered a breadth of optimized features to Windows customers worldwide. Among them is a new emoji keyboard, designed from the bottom-up with universality at its heart. Lately, emoji designers are trying to rethink some of the basic characterizations that tend to exclude people. The representation of the global community is lacking, and for its part, Microsoft leveraged the launch of the Windows 10 Anniversary Update to release over 1700 new glyphs, with a possible 52,000 combin…

It’s been just over a year since we first introduced Microsoft Edge, the brand new browser for Windows 10. We took a new direction, establishing Microsoft Edge as a browser for doing more on the web, with reading tools, notetaking, and Cortana built-in. We built it on top of the Universal Windows Platform, which includes our brand-new web rendering engine, EdgeHTML. Altogether Microsoft Edge delivers a faster, more efficient, more compatible, more secure, and more productive experience to all Windows 10 customers. Over the last year we’ve been hard at work taking Microsoft Edge to the next level with features and improvements that make every part of the browser better.…

Microsoft decided to target Google's Chrome browser back in June with a new campaign designed to highlight how bad the browser is for your laptop battery life. While Microsoft's marketing effort was initially limited to a YouTube video and associated website, the software maker has started to take things a step further in its battery battle in recent weeks. Windows 10 users are reporting that the tips feature of the OS is generating notifications to try and convince people to switch away from using Google's Chrome browser. "Chrome is draining your battery faster," reads the notification. "Switch to Microsoft Edge for up to 36 percent more browsing time," it advises. Th…

Believe it or not, Windows 10’s dark theme was one of the most anticipated features for the Anniversary Update roll out. Forget about Cortana's beefed-up capabilities, Windows Ink, or phone-PC notification integration—for many users, it’s all about getting that sleek, sleek theme. Now that the Windows 10 Anniversary Update is available you can upgrade your visual life with the new theme. But how do you enable it and how extensive are its effects? It all starts with the Settings app. Go to Start >> Settings >> Personalization >> Colors. In the main part of the Settings screen, scroll down to the bottom and under “Choose your app mode” sele…

SMB Multichannel helps customers to leverage high-bandwidth 10GiB, 40GiB, and higher networks. Since both RSS-capable and RDMA-capable NICs can be used, throughput for SMB traffic is greatly improved. The net result is faster solutions that t…

After a rash of account breaches on social media networks like MySpace, LinkedIn, Tumblr, and Twitter, the latest site to fall victim to hackers seems to be Yahoo, with a hacker claiming he’s got account information for 200 million users and is selling those credentials on the internet’s black market. The same hacker who is known to have breached other sites has put the credentials for what he says are Yahoo accounts on the Dark Web, Motherboard reports. Yahoo confirmed to Motherboard that the company is “aware of a claim,” but didn’t say whether the information was authentic or not. Still, it’s probably a good idea to change your password to something really strong…

The augmented-reality game Pokémon Go took the world by surprise over the last month with its popularity. That’s not very good news for people who have discovered that their homes or spots nearby are Pokéstops or gyms, spots where players might walk past to gather free items, or gather to battle their characters. Now one man who is tired of telling people that they can’t catch Pokémon in his backyard has filed a suit that seeks class action status. Yes, this man is literally making a federal case out of wanting some kids off his lawn. It claims to be on behalf of himself and other property owners, who are not thrilled to have people stampeding into their property with …

The flaw, which allows a malicious website to extract user passwords, is made worse if a user is logged in with a Microsoft account. A previously-disclosed flaw in Windows can allow an attacker to steal usernames and passwords of any signed-in user -- simply by tricking a user into visiting a malicious website. But now a new proof-of-exploit shows just how easy it is to steal someone's credentials. The flaw is widely-known, and it's said to be almost 20 years old. It was allegedly found in 1997 by Aaron Spangler and was most recently resurfaced by researchers in 2015 at Black Hat, an annual security and hacking conference in Las Vegas. The flaw wasn't co…

Researchers from Malwarebytes have discovered a campaign that abuses Google search featured snippets to show links to compromised websites that eventually redirect users to online scams or even exploit kits spreading ransomware. The campaign relies on crooks identifying websites that get listed in "featured snippets," a Google feature that shows answers to common user questions. Most of the times, these links lead to safe websites such as Wikipedia, but in some cases, they are also on personal blogs or news sites. Gaming SEO search results In an active campaign detected by Jerome Segura of Malwarebytes, crooks were redirecting users from a featured snippet for…

Today, the free upgrade offer for Windows 7 and 8.1 users ends -- in terms of Windows 10 system milestones, it's kind of like 12:35 a.m. on New Year's Day when all the fireworks and sparklers have gone up in smoke and the party hats and funny glasses go away never to be seen again. Only for Windows users, the disappearing party hat is an app: the infamous Get Windows 10 app will be removed from Windows 7 and 8.1 systems around the world and the steady stream of reminders will fade into history. Inevitably, the next phase of this process will be the uproar from those users who never heard about the free upgrade as they find out about it after the offer is over. They wil…
