By Paul Thurrott Apple’s new iCloud service is the most compelling and complete consumer oriented cloud computing service available today, offering deep integration between Apple’s devices and the company’s other products and services. iCloud is a no brainer for any iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad user, and that’s true whether you’re a Windows or Mac fan. By Paul Thurrott A lot has changed since my August update: I’m using the Windows 8 Developer Preview almost exclusively, I’ve changed up my server configurations, and I’m starting to use tablet computing devices more. Here’s a more up-to-date look at the hardware, software, and services I use regularly. Source: Win Super Site

By Paul Thurrott You can purchase a Windows Phone 7.5-based HTC Titan for one cent today only, online only, from AT&T Wireless. This is the largest Windows Phone handset and the one, I believe, with the best camera. Source: Win Super Site

By Paul Thurrott The other day, I blogged about one of the single best tech industry ads I’ve ever seen. But here’s an even better version, with 24 additional seconds of Apple sycophant bashing. If you just can’t get enough of this oh-so-deserved comeuppance--and really, who can resist?--you’re going to love this new version of the ad even more. Source: Win Super Site

By Paul Thurrott I appeared on the Tech News Today podcast this week with Tom Merritt, Sarah Lane, Iyaz Akhtar and Jason Howell. We discussed Microsoft’s renewed interest in purchasing Yahoo, HTC’s abortive attempt to buy S3, hackers didn’t destroy a water pump, whether Apple’s making a TV, Kinect for Windows, China leapfrogs US as largest smart phone market, and more. By Paul Thurrott As you may now, Microsoft now provides PC makers with a free version of Office 2010 called Office 2010 Starter. It’s only available to consumers with a new PC, and of course it includes a means by which the user can upgrade electronically to a higher-end and more powerful version of Office. But until now, it’s only been available to those that purchased a new PC, and not to just anyone. Source: Win Super Site

  12. Our enterprise has already deployed Office 2010 globally and we now need to deploy 10 additional proofing tools via SCCM. I've configured the 2010 proofing tools Proofkit.WWConfig.xml to include/exclude the required languages. Below is s snipit of our Config.xml The installation is successful, The issue I have is that the languages need to be manually 'added' on the Office Word (File>Optiions>Language>Add additional editing languages) once manually added they all show as 'Installed'. However I'm trying to have all 10 languages already listed as 'Installed' wthout any user intervention. Is this possible without reinstalling Office? Vi…

Hi, noob question.. I used icacls * /save /T /C /L /Q to back up the security of each of the objects. I have 13 volumes so there are 13 iterations of the command, which is run through a cmd file and backed up on a weekly basis via the task scheduler The only error is the system information object which is never saved. When I try to restore the security it fails. For example, My photos drive is V:\ To back up security from the root of v:\ - icacls * /save c:\acl_back\photos.txt /T /C /L /Q Restoring the DACLS requires the directory parameter. Since the backup is taken from the root of the volume, there are litterally hundreds of directories/folders…

Severity Rating: Important Revision Note: V4.1 (November 23, 2011): Corrected the installation switches and switch tables for Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package and Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package Service Pack 1. This is an informational change only. Summary: This security update resolves a publicly disclosed vulnerability in certain applications built using the Microsoft Foundation Class (MFC) Library. The vulnerability could allow remote code execution if a user opens a legitimate file associated with such an affected application, and the file is located in the same network folder as a specially crafted library file. 18. Hello, I'm new here, but anyway i have strange problem, when joining computer in our domain. I have user 'xxxx', its regular user account and he is only member of domain users group. When i add new computer to domain this particular user becomes member of local "Offer Remote Assistance Helpers" group. Now i wasn't "there" when domain was created :) but there must be some kind of setting that made this happen. I do have security group membership setup in group policy and this user is definitively not in any of those settings, also when i remove him from that group, he doesnt appear anymore after gpudate. I did use group policy modeling wizard and it confirms that my set…

By Paul Thurrott This is just precious. A new Samsung advertisement goes after the trendy hipster types that stand in line for hours to buy new Apple products, even though in this case--with the iPhone 4S--there are superior devices out there already. The ad nicely parodies the whole Apple Store line experience--you know, because they may not make enough of them, so you better get in line. Source: Win Super Site

By Paul Thurrott I’ve been complaining for a while now that the Kinect isn’t accurate enough to work well in various situations, including dimply lit rooms and while the user is within 6 feet of the device. This sort of undercuts various Microsoft initiatives aimed at broadening the appeal of the device. Until now, that is: Microsoft announced today that it will release new and improved Kinect hardware for Windows PCs in 2012. Source: Win Super Site
