Salutations: I am having a strange problem with Vista. I installed a clean copy of Vista Home Premium, and I made sure that my system could handle it by using Vista Upgrade Advisor. Upon install, any time my system is doing a resource intensive task, like installing updates, installing new software, or burning a DVD, it simply shuts down. This did not happen with XP. My hardware is functioning fine. My power supply is new. My internal case temperature is steady at 82 F, and the processor temp is steady at 93 F. This is rendering Vista an unusable product, and I'm not sure what to do! Below is information about the error I am repeatedly getting (about every 20 …

I'm having problems with Windows Vista on my laptop. Whenever I try to do a 'windows update' it just tells me that "Windows could not search for new updates. Error code 80004002." From what I can gather I'm not the only one having this problem, but I'm just wondering if anyone has found a solution yet or can help me in anyway? I'd appreciate any feedback! Thanks for your time! hi all, i deleted on purpose the runas.exe files and folders and also the takeown.exe files and folders, but i didnt know that it would affect windows updates and now i cant update to windows 7 service pack 1,so i ran the fix readliness and it fixed one error, which i believe it would be the takeown.exe coz after installing the fix i noticed that the takeown.exe files were there again, but then the sp1 throws another error and i researched and i found out that that error occurs due to file corrupted ,so i ran the command sfc/ scannow and it found errors ..when i looked in the file log i right away found what was going on and i believe that its because the runas.exe file …

Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit, fully patched and kept up to date. I was away a few days and came home to find my machine on but with a bluescreen of death. I rebooted and Windows did some repair stuff and then it brought up the login screen. Issue is mouse and keyboard are unresponsive, so no ability to login to do anything further. I tried safe mode with networking same issue. I tried a PS2 keyboard, same issue. (Both keyboards work in bios and on any windows repair screens). Next I tried a plain old USB mouse, same issue. I tried checking bios for USB enabled (it was) and then rebooted, same issue. In normal and safe mode windows boots fine into login screen but then loses…

I do a clean install. Delete all the partitions, make a new one, format. Then "Copying files" takes approx 1 second. Then it does to "Expand" and gives me the error. Exact message: "Windows cannot install required files. The file may be corrupt or missing. Make sure all files required for installation are available, and restart the installation. Error code: 0x80070570" Continue reading...

By Paul Thurrott If you thought there was nothing stranger than Microsoft being the subject of an antitrust lawsuit for actions it allegedly took against a product that is no longer owned by the company that’s suing, then hold on to your seat. Because it just got stranger: A federal jury has deadlocked, effectively ending the case. But the company suing Microsoft says it’s going to try again. And that means a whole new trial. Continue reading...

By Paul Thurrott While many point to the Metro UI as evidence of innovation in Windows Phone, this platform’s cloud-centricity is, I think, the more profound innovation. You can see this in the system’s support for email, PIM, and social networking accounts and in its various integrated hubs. And in Windows Phone 7.5, you can see it in the platform’s first-ever support for over-the-air podcast subscriptions. Continue reading...

By Paul Thurrott RIM announced this week that its next generation mobile OS, now called Blackberry 10, won’t ship until the end of 2012, a full year from now. This comes on the heels of one of the worst years I’ve ever seen any tech company experience, and I’d remind you that this happened during a time in which both Yahoo and HP were stumbling around blindly. Continue reading...

The experience of signing in to your PC with touch has traditionally been a cumbersome one. In a world with increasingly strict password requirements—with numbers, symbols, and capitalization—it can take upwards of 30 seconds to enter a long, complex password on a touch keyboard. We have a strong belief that your experience with Windows 8 should be both fast and fluid, and that starts when you sign in. Other touch experiences in the marketplace have tried to tackle this problem, with the canonical example being a numeric PIN. A PIN is a great solution: Almost everyone has seen or used one before, and a keypad is simple to use with touch. We knew though, that there was …

By Paul Thurrott An often irreverent look at this week’s other news, including Bill Gates’ denial about returning to Microsoft, Dell abandons the netbook market, Amazon sells over 1 million Kindles each week, Nokia’s first smart phone for the US, no verdict in the Novell/Microsoft antitrust case, Samsung’s Galaxy Tab lemonade, a Blackberry 10 delay and, finally, an Apple product made in the US. By Paul Thurrott To say that Microsoft has been on a torrid release schedule when it comes to upgrading its cloud-based services is a bit of an understatement. Today, the company revealed that it has completed deploying the latest version of its Hotmail email service, so all customers are now on the new version. And in celebration of that, the company has provided a list of the top 10 new features in this release ... and a new Hotmail app for Android. Continue reading...

By Paul Thurrott I’ve seen a lot of strange complaints in recent days from the Windows Phone crowd, since Microsoft is porting a lot of its mobile apps to iOS and Android now, presumably nixing some of their favorite platform’s key differentiators. But the real advantage of Windows Phone has nothing to do with apps, it’s all about the wonderful Metro user experience, which deemphasizes the need for standalone apps. And today, Microsoft profiled some of the folks responsible for that UI. Continue reading...
