Hi I have a Windows 7 64 bit machine. I have 2 ATI HD 4980 PCIe cards. I have never had any issues with this. Rescently I had to do a system restore to a week back and after this every time I start my computer and the desktop loads up I get this error below. When I click on check online for solution, it just doesnt solve anything. I can launch some games but after a level finishes the game crashes. This never happened before. I have tried going on to AMD site and installing the new drivers from here http://sites.amd.com/us/game/downloads/Pages/radeon_win7-64.aspx Reinstalling drivers didnt fix the problem. Yesterday I bought a 64-bit Microsoft office pack and attempted to install it, it failed to install because I had the 32-bit version of Microsoft Word 2007 on my computer. I was unable to uninstall the 2007 Word by any normal means so I looked it up and found a fix offered by the Microsoft corporation to remove it. It worked but deleted a registry value required for the Windows Installer to run so now whenever I try to install anything including my new Microsoft pack I get the 1719 error. I have tried everything I can think of: -Rolling back my computer (an error occurred and it wiped all my system restore points) -Entering CMD codes (which fail saying access denie…

I am having trouble installing KB 2553455 (Update for Microsoft Office 2010 32-bit edition) through Windows Update. I have tried several times, and each time it fails to install. I have also tried to download the stand-alone update directly from Microsoft, but this also did not work. When I try to install through this method, it fails immediately and tells me that "an error occurred while running detection". When I output the results to a log, I get a "system.proc.result" of "17044". (I am not sure if this is useful or not.) What can I do to resolve the issue? My operating system is Vista x64 Home Premium, SP 2 Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2010. In addition to this …

We are currently using Office 2003/XP but will shortly be moving to Office 2010/Windows 7. The users are being trained on Quick Access Toolbars, and a big fight has emerged as to the best practice for backing these up and allowing availability for people should they move to a different machine (we dont use roaming profiles). My question is really two-fold, would it be possible to store the users QAT files on a network share, say \\COMPUTER\%USERNAME%\QATS and point all the users installs to this same location. if not then, can I ask what best practice for this scenario might be? Thanks in advance. John Continue reading...

Hello! In Office 2010, there is a setting to turn off image compression for one file or for all files. I believe that if you set this, it either updates the file you are currently editing, or the normal.dotx. This works good! I am trying to set up a custom deployment for my organization using the Microsoft Office Customization tool. I have searched, but cannot find a place to turn off image compression. Is this setting in the Microsoft Office Customization Tool? Thanks! Continue reading...

Hello I manage a quite high traffic website. I send my readers a direct link to download a file, which sits on an Apache server (no 301, nothing special). The file is in a Wordpress "upload" directory, but this should have no impact on the bug. Firefox users can click on the link and download the file without any problem IE users click on the file and they receive a "downloading..." message, but the file is not downloaded and cannot be open, until a popup appears : "download error" I have lots of these bug reports. Here you have one of the links with the issue : Link Continue reading...

IBM Thinkpads offer a cool tool in their proprietary "Battery Maximizer" software under "Battery Maintenance" that allows you to set the charge level at which a re-charge is triggered. This is supposed to maximize battery lifetime by reducing unnecessary re-charge cycles on a computer that remains plugged in most of the time. But I don't have this Thinkpad software. Now that I've found some related and equally cool tools that are native to XP SP3 itself (e.g., PowerCfg to manually set the processor throttle for lower power consumption, and Wembtest to determine both the maximum AND the CURRENT processor clock rates), I'm wondering: Does XP offer any such control ove…

I know, I know, this very obsolete stuff, but... I would like to know if there is any way to get NetBEUI running under XP SP3. I have a small Workgroup that still has some W2K machines running NetBEUI for file sharing within the LAN. (TCP/IP file sharing is turned off I was advosed long ago that it was safer this way because of various Microsoft vulnerabilities in NetBIOS over Tcpip.) I have two XP XP3 machines on this Workgroup that were upgraded from SP2 AFTER NetBEUI had already been installed, and they are networking just fine. Here's the problem: I am now upgrading one of the W2K machines with a XP SP3 new-install CD -- there is no way to uninstall SP3 and re-i…

I turned on my laptop yesterday morning and was going about my business on facebook and such when suddenly my computer "Blue screened". Ever since then my computer takes about 10 minutes to start up, after the Windows Vista loading bar, it says "Please Wait", on this screen is where I have to wait. Then once I log in I instantly get the "Windows has encountered a critical problem..."(My computer doesnt restart, I can't even manually shut it down, I have to hold the button down on my laptop to turn it off.) even before my icons have come up, although it does take about 5-7 minutes to get my icons up. Once they are up, I can open programs and games with ease, but anything W…

We have recently purchased Hp PC's and 2 work OK, the third has a USB external drive attached. This one originally wouldnt boot, so I changed the boot order in the bios to boot from HDD not USB HDD. The system now boots fine, but will not shut down. The user clicks start shutdown, and Vista goes through the process but the system reboots every time. We have closed all of the programs so nothing is running, unplugged all external devices but still it reboots. Any clues on how to resolve this? Continue reading...
