by Guest Paul Thurrott- 0 replies

By Paul Thurrott The original HP Slate was highly touted at CES a few years back but the device itself got off to the quietest launch I can remember and never really amounted to much. But now HP is back with the HP Slate 2, a follow-up to its original Slate. Is it worth checking out? Continue reading...

~Scan Schedule~
by Guest Pam&Jim- 0 replies

Even though it shows as 'green', the home page indicates that the last scan was two weeks ago (Jan 21st) and is supposed to scan every Sunday. Does the computer have to be 'on' when it's scanning? I'm not here Sunday @ 2:00 am. Additionally (and coincidentally) just prior to beginning this post a notification that my system was at risk popped up. Hmmm, any input is gratefully appreciated. Pam Continue reading...

Hi, i try to migrate profiles from XP, 32bit to Win7, 64bit. Scanstate runs properly. But loadstate throws this error. I have administrative rights, i'm logged in as a domain administrator, and i'm member of the local group of administrators. When i choose the context menu and "execute as another user" and type the credentials of my domain admin account, i get an error saying he can't connect to the network drive where the profiles are stored. When i choose "execute as administrator", nothing happens. Thanks for any hints. Bernd Continue reading...

Setup is starting up services after sysprep OOBE generalize
by Guest brunobliss- 0 replies
I need to generate a NEW SID for my security principals so i can clone the image and deploy along the way ... the thing is, this only seems possible using sysprep OOBE and by checking Generalize, and the problem with that is, once i restart system hangs on "Setup is starting up services". This doesn't happen if i don't check Generalize, but then again i don't get new sids generated for computer account etc. Failed Solutions so far: . Checking setup.etl for "failed to procees" or "reg key" gives zero results, a deeper inspection doesn't show relevant information. . Stopping the media player sharing service and disabling digital driver signing doesn't solve, setup still …

by Guest Tom_H42- 0 replies

Every time I open an Office program, it opens a configuration window that first asks me for my product key. I type it in, it finishes after a minute or so. It then seems to stop popping up for a day or so at a time. Then it happens all over again. I've tried opening my Outlook in safe-mode to see if it was my google or iCloud plug-in but the window still shows up. If I click cancel, it says "Microsoft cannot verify the license for this application. A repair attempt failed or was canceled by the user. The application will now shut down." I know this isn't a huge deal, but I never have my product key on hand and I want to be able to use Word without having to worry about it…

Adobe Reader alternative problems
by Guest 1letterman- 0 replies
I tried to use an alternate program to open or read pdf files because IE would not work properly with Adobe X. No luck. MS says it's not their problem but I don't agree. This seems to be a problem in IE that's not exclusively Adobe. I started having problems when Adobe tried to update to version X. I have been using Nuance PDF Converter Pro for several years now and removed Adobe from my system completely to avoid clashes. I have no problem with any programs exept IE. When I know I have to download or read a .pdf file online, I have to go to the site with Chrome. IE will not allow any pdfs to be opened in or out of the browser. I upgraded to IE 9 to try and see if it wou…

Weve featured several posts about how were working to improve battery life for Windows 8 PCs. In Pat Stemens What about background copy jobs. If I put explorer application to background to look [at or] write a word document, do you mean the copy-job is paused until I "fullscreen" the copy-job again? Seriously? The answer to that question is no, file copy will definitely continue to work exactly as it does today and will not get suspended if you start a copy job and then go do something else while it completes in the background. This works the same whether you are in front of the PC using it or leave the PC long enough for the screen saver or lock screen to kick in. Su…

Windows 8 Secrets: WinRT, the Windows Runtime
by Guest Paul Thurrott- 0 replies

By Paul Thurrott In Windows 8, Microsoft isn’t just replacing the Windows shell with the new Metro-style Start screen. It’s also replacing the low-level Windows runtime engine with a new technology called WinRT. What does this mean to you? It means that Windows 8 really is a complete reimagining of Microsoft’s dominant operating system. Continue reading...

Hello we have a laptop that is running windows 7 64-bit with office 2010 professional. It is wired to a server running server 2003. Everything is fine while connected to the server but once it is offline it will not do anything with Microsoft Office. When I run Word i get normal.dotm errors. I tried repairing office, deleting and recreating the .dotm file but with no luck. My boss needs to work offline away from the server but at this time he cant because of this issue. I enabled files for offline use but they cannot be edited because of the office problems. This is an urgent situation so any help is greatly appreciated. Continue reading...

Can a website cause BSOD?
by Guest AngelStar- 0 replies
Hi, Our IT department are blaming a website development we have put in on user experiencing blue screen Stop Errors. After browsing google, I think most would say that it is not the cause and the fact that it only affects internal users and not external users adds further weight to the argument, I feel. I was just wondering if there was any authority I can give in response rather than "I googled it and don't think it did" or, indeed, if there is a way in which the website could have caused it. When I say "caused it" I do mean directly. I understand that the website can cause some software to run that would result in the error but I feel this would be the responsibility…

Deploying Windows 7 in a unique way
by Guest bcox9- 0 replies
Hello everyone I need some assistance in deploying Windows 7. The way that my company does it now is we build a system with our enterprise edition of W7 on any new hardware we get in. For instance we have 30 new desktops in now. We then go to Backup and Restore and create a system image onto an external hard drive. Once this completes we get another system stick in the USB containing our copy of Win7 and when it loads the files to memory we select "Repair your computer". From there you can load the system image onto the new machine. Reboot, then run sysprep with OOBE to make sure the machine gets unique SID and everything else sysprep does to the machine. My line of thi…
