I have purchases a product code for Vista Home Premium. I could not find the disk, so I installed Vista Basic. Microsoft will not allow the premium code to register the "basic" program. How can I get the two to work together on my machine? MS won't let me get the upgrade program without registering the basic version...and on and on it goes. Continue reading...

Windows security alert icon shows in my tray. When I clicked on it, the window for firewall and automatic updates came up. It said the firewall was off but the auto updates was on. Went to the start menu to bring up the menu and changed to turn on the firewall. Now the firewall is on but the automatic updates is off and I can't get it to go back on when I hit apply and ok. Now when I hit the security alert icon, a window comes up saying 'what do you want to open the program with?'. I also did a scan with the Malware program which indicated 5 infections, which I deleted. That's when things seemed to really mess up. Any ideas? Continue reading...

As far as I can tell reading the license agreement it is a bit grey with the balance of probability being that it is not permitted. If it is a commercial organisation of up to 10 machines that is allowed. If I as an individual install it in a non-profit organisation or an educational establishment - that is NOT allowed. As the IT dept of a small non-profit organisation (a baptist church with 4 PCs and no servers) that leaves me slightly concerned about the legal ramifications. If we were a company making money then it would be no problem. The only possibly vaguely legal way I could see what I want to do being legal is to create a company which potentially could be…

Hello: Can someone tell me if Microsoft Security Essentials protects your email accounts? I have a charter account and today I had some kind of virus pop up when I opened a message and I quickly got out of the email and ran a scan. I wasn't sure what to do. That's why I asked about MSE. I have windows 7 and this was the first time this happened to me. What is the difference between MSE and Windows Defender. Do I need an online security software besides MSE? Thank you. Using Bank of America, I enter my ID and the site checker comes up. At that time Iternet Explorer shuts down and will not progress. The bank says it is a problem with Internet Explorer and suggested that I download another browser. I did download Firefox and the bank site works fine. I got the Windows XP Home Security 2012 virus on my computer. I managed to clean it off by putting the drive in another computer and remote scanning it with malware bytes. This removed the virus, but then programs still wouldn't open. Then searched the registry and found "HKEY_ROOT/something/something/shell/exefile" and there was a key that pointed to /Application Data/virus.exe in a couple of locations. After removing those, all the programs appeared to work. However, now my automatic updates are turned off and I cannot turn them on. I can also not update windows manually. Additionally, Microsoft Security Essentials will not update. I have uninstalled and re-inst…

I had windows Xp and Windows 7 in a dual boot configuration on separate partitions on the same drive. Windows 7 Developed startup problems (was getting about 75% of the way through starting up and then stopped on a blank screen with the mouse cursor) that could not be repaired using startup repair. So i decided to try to remove windows 7 and reinstall it. I used a program called easyBCD to remove the windows 7 entry in the boot manager and then remove the boot manager itself. I then formated the windows 7 partition. I tested XP and it worked fine I pressed F8 during bootup to see if the (dual) boot manager was there and it had been removed. So then i tried to clean in…
