2 of my sons have laptops. We used Microsoft Security Essentials to run a full scan on both computers and one of them came up with a trojan virus having been detected and under "action taken" it says allowed. The other computer shows 2 trojan viruses with the same action taken. When I click on them to see what they are, they come up as "severe threats" that must be removed immediately. First of all, why didn't they get removed in the first place---(like the other threats that were found) and secondly, it tells us to remove them, but it doesn't tell us how to go about doing that. Can anyone help? Continue reading...

Microsoft has long been a champion of low levels of customer service. It used to be, though, that they at least had a help function that was searchable and helped you occasionally find an answer to a question. Now they just dump you out on the internet...might as well use Google. They want 259 bucks to answer a question. When will someone free us from this monster???? Continue reading...

We want to install Office Pro 2010 on our server and be able to access it from 2 or 3 thin clients through terminal services. From what I've read, it seems we need a volume license. However, the minimum number of users you can purchase is 5. Do we have to bite the bullet and make the minimum purchase? Or is there another option for smaller companies? Continue reading...

I received an email from one of my contacts. Subject: Amazing! (with a link to watch a video). After that, my friend emailed me to say that she had NOT sent this email and it should NOT be opened. Since then, my email address has been used to send this email and another one (subject: Woow!) to my contact list. How do I rectify this and how do I let everyone know that this was not send by me and that it should not be opened? Continue reading...

I purchased a new Toshiba Satellite in '09 that came with a free upgrade to Windows 7 as soon as that OS would be released, a few months after I bought it. I got the upgrade in the mail, installed it, then a nasty virus took over and my only course of action was to do a system restore, taking me back to the originally-installed Vista. Recently, I found my old installation disc, in a cd case without the instruction booklet, and upgraded my computer once more to Windows 7. My problem is that it's asking me for an Activation Key that I no longer have. I assume the activation key was on the disc sleeve, but that has gone missing (I have moved since then, and little things…

I got an ipod touch, and it will replace my old ipod. When I plug in the USB cord, nothing is recognized by the computer. It is also not recognizing my old ipod when I plug it in now. I have other devices that use a USB cord, and they work the way they should. Apple has told me to check with Security Essentials to see if they are blocking a driver....I am totally at a loss. Is it the ipod or is it the security, or is it the computer? I have tried everything on separate computers, and they still don't work. Any help is appreciated! Continue reading...

Why didn't MSE detect and stop the My Security Shield Virus from infecting my laptop? I had MSE running with current updates. The virus infected my son's user account. I ran MSE full system scan in his user account, but after scanning halfway for 2 hours, my laptop would completely shut down. I ran MSE full scan in my own user (administrator) ID taking four hours, and it did not detect the virus at all. I finally had to search the internet on another computer for help to manually find and remove it. I did. I found it by going to Task Manager in my user id, and clicking the box at bottom to see all users' activity (while my son's was logged on). I saw a strange exe file th…

First up is Andrew and his wishlist for the new year which include better internet and TV integration, USB 3.0 devices, a major iPad competitor, and convertible tablet/laptops. Paul wishes for a 7 inch iPad or iPod Touch, Windows Phone will become third most popular smartphone, Microsoft to get ARM based versions of Windows 8 right, Xbox Live Gold to be discontinued, and the death of physical media. Among the predictions Andrew thinks Windows 8 may not be released next summer, a major revamp of iOS hardware and software, and ultrabooks may not live up to the hy…

We have created Office 2010 package using OCT and created an MSP file. This installs Word, Excel and Powerpoint. I have created XML files for adhoc packages such as Access, Infopath and Sharepoint Workspace. Whenever I install Access 2010 using XML files created, it also installs Microsoft Sharepoint Workspace 2010. Why is that? Following is the XML file used: We have avoided using OCT MSP files to deploy Adhoc features as our requirement adding and removing features constantly due to licensing and the best method is XML Is there anyway to avoid Sharepoint to be deployed at the same time as Access 2010 using XML?
