I was over my godparent’s house during July 4th and they asked me to have a look @ their computer that they believed was infected w/ a virus. looking it over i found that they kept having virus prompts coming up by a software called 'personal antivirus' and it kept prompting them to purchase protection. its actions were suspicious. i looked around for any other av and found that their mcafee av was expired which would explain how they got this malware in the 1st place. i tried to uninstall ‘personal antivirus’ but was unsuccessful, even checking the registry where i couldn't find it. I tried to install ‘avg free’ but it couldn’t because it saw ‘personal anitvirus’ as…

Hello, all. I'm writing to try and troubleshoot the removal of a malware program called XP Antispyware 2009. I have already run Spybot, Adaware, and Malwarebytes. They seemed to be successful. Now I can't seem to get rid of the the tray icon -and- after I had removed the program the wired Intel 10/100 ethernet adapter stopped functioning. So, my 2 questions: (1) How do I get rid of the XP antispyware tray icon and associated popup? (2) Is there a way using windows (XP) to re-install my wired ethernet adapter or do I have to go somewhere and download new software for the hardware? Or do I even have to reinstall the hardware at all? Thanks, Ben. Continue readin…

I have a script that installs software/updates on remote computers. It has worked well with XP and 2000, but fails with Windows 7 (and Server 2008). The error in the setup log says "Windows update could not be installed because of error 2147942405 "Access is Denied." Command line: wusa c:\temp\windows6.1-KB.... If I run the exact came command line while logged into the computer, it works fine. The script copies the update to the remote computer, and launches the update with win32_process.create. I've tried to lower the security posture on the remote computer, but that didn't help. There must be something in Windows 7 that doesn't allow such things to be remotely launche…

Do you have to create the Windows Defender Offline bootable media on a similar kind of computer to the one you'll be running it on? - Can one be Windows XP SP3 32-bit and the other Windows 7 64-bit? - Can one have an AMD processer and the other an Intel processor, etc? - Can one have a CD drive and the other a DVD drive of a different make. In other words, does the bootable media creation process copy anything from the creating computer's operating system, or does it get all its files from the download from Microsoft? Does the bootable media creation computer have to resemble the destination computer in anyway other than they both be running legitimate and …

In XP we used a domain account called “clone” to set up network printers connected from a print server. Once the network printers were added to this user we would log in as another user and copy clone to default user. This would give all users the network printers we wanted them to have when they logged in. In windows 7 this is not an option. So we have been using another way of making changes to the default user from here. Basically we set up a local admin called “USER” and with the printers and assign a default. Then we restart the computer and log in as administrator and make a copy of user and rename it to default. Now when users log in they get all the printe…

By: Paul Thurrott The Christmas holiday saw a record number of activations for devices based on Google’s Android and Apple’s iOS, according to a web metric firm I’d never previously heard of. But Google confirmed its own success, saying that it activated millions of new devices over Christmas. For Apple, all we have to go on for now is an estimate. Continue reading...

I got an ipod touch, and it will replace my old ipod. When I plug in the USB cord, nothing is recognized by the computer. It is also not recognizing my old ipod when I plug it in now. I have other devices that use a USB cord, and they work the way they should. Apple has told me to check with Security Essentials to see if they are blocking a driver....I am totally at a loss. Is it the ipod or is it the security, or is it the computer? I have tried everything on separate computers, and they still don't work. Any help is appreciated! Continue reading...

We just had a old computer crash on us and bought a new one from best buy. Its used our vet clinic and is on a network with 5 other computers. The program we use is linked with a label printer for prescriptions. I installed the label printers program on the computer and it was working fine but everytime the computer is turned off at night, we get here in the morning and it doesnt work from just that computer. The only way I can get it to work is to uninstall and reinstall the program each time. As you can imagine this is very annoying to do EVERY morning. I've already spoke with software company that the label printer goes through and its nothing on their end they said i…
