By: Paul Thurrott When it comes to automatically pushing phone-based pictures to the cloud, no one has Apple beat: With the iPhone 4S and an iCloud feature called Photo Stream, Apple’s users have a best of breed solution that just works, and does so automatically. It’s not without quirks, however, so if you want to take best advantage of this solution, please read on. Continue reading...

After printing the instructions from the Dell OS reinstall page, I reinstalled Windows from the Dell OS Reinstallation CD to XP Home SP 1. It will boot to desktop. I need help updating it to current version. Windows Update will not work unless using latest SP. The MS page for SP 3 says I need SP1a or SP2 to use it. The page to go from SP1 to SP1a downloads the installer program but when I run it the "server is not responding" message appears and directs me to no a longer present web page to download a different install process. I have spent hours bouncing around Microsoft web pages to no avail. Running XP SP1 with IE6 makes it virtually impossible to do anything…

I always get an error 30 when attempting to inject video drivers into the Windows 7 WIM. All other driver types work just fine, but the latest ATI & NVidia WHQL drivers have issues. I have attempted, using the latest WAIK, to package these drivers with Vista x64 SP2 and Win7 x64 (7600 RTM) as hosts with no luck. Any ideas? Sample DISM error log: 2009-09-20 15:01:31, Error DISM DISM Driver Manager: PID=3052 Failed to install the driver package 'C:\W7x86Drvs\Display\NVidia\NV_DISP.INF'. - CDmiDriverStore::Import(hr:0x8007001e) Continue reading...

My ZT Systems desktop does not list a "Windows Universial Serial Bus Controller" in it's Device Manager. I am trying to install an Apple Ipod and my computer can't locate the appropriate driver. I spoke with both Apple and ZT Systems Tech Support and the Ipod installs on my laptop and all other devices I try are recognized by my ZT Systems desktop. I am told I need to down load the USB host controller but don't know how. I would appreciate any suggestions other than "restoring" my computer. I can't afford to lose all my information. Thanks. By: Paul Thurrott Beleaguered Blackberry maker RIM is offering each of its poorly-selling PlayBook tablets for a fire sale price of just $299 via its online store today. And while that may seem like quite a deal, especially for the 64 GB unit, my advice today is the same as it was when HP’s doomed TouchPad was offered for just $99 back in August: Practice restraint. I've been trying to find a way to permanently uninstall and remove the built-in Games (Solitaire, Mahjong, etc.) in Windows 7 (Ultimate, etc.). I've turned the features off and tried to remove relevant/related entries in the registry and deleted corresponding files from Program Files directories, etc., but no matter what I do, the built-in games always return as an option for install under "Turn Windows features on or off". How can I completely and permanently remove Games so that no user (administrative class or other) can reinstall them? Thanks. Continue reading...

I am having a problem getting Windows Group Policy Peferences to apply to machines immediately after they are imaged. We are using Group Policy Preferences to, among other things, set a customized power plan as the default plan. Upon logging into a machine after it has been imaged, I can see our customized power plan, but it is not selected as the default plan. RSOP shows that the policy that contains the preferences is being applied. Group Policy settings that reside in the same GPO as the Preferences have also been applied correctly. Only the Prefences are not applying. We are using an image task sequence in SCCM to deploy the image. The image is of Win 7 SP1 64b…

Device manager has an entry for the MS generic IPMI compliant device: Driver Date: 21/06/2006, Driver Version: 6.1.7601.17514, Resources reports an I/O range and no conflicts. Although the general tab device status says: "No drivers are installed for this device." Running some test vbs scripts via WMI and WinRM show neither the IPMI provider or the Microsoft_IPMI driver are installed. There is no root/hardware namespace entry when enumerating namespaces, nor when searching registry. BMC is working via LAN access, and reports KCS interface is functioning. Reinstalling / updating IPMI driver always results in same driver being installed (as above). This article (http:…
