Folks: I have a network client (Win7) that is using a network share as the default place for %appdata% and other random files/folders. For example, if she installs Dymo Printer software, it puts the Dymo folder there. PDF logs go there. Etc. I have opened %appdata% and it seems to open in the right place (Roaming). Does anyone know what is causing this? Thanks. Micah Continue reading...

Hello, everyone, Let me get this out of the way: I like the newest beta. It's easy to tell, for example, the beta is being very diligent in overseeing all file operations from the small performance hit I am seeing. Text files seem not to be a problem, but virtually all other file types are taking a wee bit longer to respond. File copy operations, notably, across drives, are noticeably slower than before. It seems that every file is scanned when it is looked at, even those that have previously been scanned. Oddly, I notice no hit when just looking at directories. While I understand that things can change with files in the event of a malware infection, it make…

I received a popup message saying "Windows File Protection Files that are required for Windows to run properly have been replaced by unrecognized versions. To maintain system stability, Windows must restore the original versions of these files. Insert your Windows XP Professional CD-ROM now. Problem is: I don't know where this CD is. The legal assistant that worked here before me was the one to install XP. What are my options for correcting this? Continue reading...

Explorer freezes whenever I try to move a file, or when a download is about to finish (the download stops at 99-100% and never finishes). Infact, explorer freezes even if I as much as right click a file. This issue only arises when I have MSE installed... I've googled it and followed instructions on clearing out remnants of earlier security software, but it didn't help. The issue remains even on a clean reinstall of Windows. My girlfriend has the exact same problem we both run Windows 7 64-bit. Is there anything to do except use another program? Because other than this, I really like MSE. Continue reading...

I'm trying to enable password protection on my netbook (windows 7 starter) by issuing the following line command: wmic path Win32_UserAccount where Name='xxxxxx' set PasswordExpires=true where xxxxxx is my userid. This fails w/ the following response: ERROR: Description= Generic failure The userid I've logged on to has administrator privileges. Let me mention that a month ago my netbook would not start and I had to recover my system from a backup. This command worked for me prior to this event. Curiously, the following command works fine: wmic path Win32_UserAccount where Name='xxxxxx' set PasswordExpires=false Any help is appreciated. Cont…

Hi everyone: I am trying to set up our office computer running Windows 7 Professional with a set of local Group Policy objects to guard against viruses and installation of junk software (like browser toolbars, etc.) I tried setting up Norton to do it for us, but it doesn't really work -- it makes things slow, it costs money and then when time comes to renew the Norton license it becomes another pain in the rear because no one remembers the license number (including Norton itself.) So I decided to try Group Policy objects, which is free. Let me add that the people that will be using this computer are not trying to install anything bad intentionally, so there will be no m…

Hi Folks! I had been using hmonitor.exe ( http://www.hmonitor.net ) to monitor the core temps on my laptop (which is an excellent tool) when suddenly, after a few days of internittent usage, MSSE reported hmonitor.exe as a trojan/virus, containing the obfuscator.xz virus and then suggested I remove it from my Windows 7 Ultimate machine. See: http://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/Threat/Encyclopedia/Entry.aspx?Name=VirTool%3AWin32%2FObfuscator.XZ I emailed Alexander Berezkin, the hmonitor.exe creator, and he noted this was a false positive, confirming that hmonitor.exe did not conatin any viruses. I need your help....is this a result of MSSE reporting a fals…

IE10 Platform Preview 4 includes support for a new CSS property, -ms-user-select, which makes it easier for Web developers to control exactly what text can be selected on their Web sites. If you were to watch me all day at my workstation, you would notice that as I read on the computer, I select text. I’m not the only one who reads like this selecting text on the Internet is important in many other scenarios. Consider a typical news Web site. Most pages will include a news article, the contents of which the user needs to be able to select because they read by selecting text or because they want to share the content. Also on the news Web page there are some menus and li…

I have a Windows XP system that is showing signs of a "rootkit" infection. I have installed Microsoft Security Essentials AND Symanted Endpoint Client. MSE runs and shows no problems exist. SEC also runs and shows no problem. While SEC is running a full hard drive scan i notice that it hangs for a few seconds on "ntos", "VirusRemoval.vbs" and "NewVirusRemoval". All 3 files are shown as being in the SYSTEM32 directory. When i examine the directory none of the 3 files are visable. The workstation is running slow and I believe is infected with a rootkit virus. I've downloaded a standalone version of Windows Defender camm ed "Microsoft Standalone System Sweeper". …
