By Paul Thurrott I’m starting a new series of articles about Office 365 with a focus on the individuals and small businesses that are most likely to adopt this exciting new productivity service. The series will cover initial setup stages such as configuring a custom domain, look at integration with Windows Small Business Server 2011 Essentials, examine the optional, subscription version of Office Professional Plus, and more. By Paul Thurrott Yahoo co-founder Jerry Yang suddenly exited his struggling company Tuesday, setting off speculation about the timing and giving Yahoo stock a small bump. Widely considered ineffectual and detrimental to Yahoo’s chances of survival, Yang perhaps clung too tightly to the company he helped found with David Filo in 1995. Continue reading...

Hey all, I put together an installer for installing office 2010 with an adminfile. It works great on windows XP, but in Windows 7, I get an error message. It seems to have to do with paths, or permissions, but I've used both "run as administrator" from the right-click menu AND full paths pointing to the relevant files. Anyone know what I'm doing wrong? I'm attaching a screenshot.. Continue reading...

Hi - what are the security implications of adding 'about:internet' OR 'res://' to Trusted Sites. I know what Trusted Sites is, and how it works, and I know about:internet is the MOTW that can be added to webpages to have them treated as 'Internet' - but what I don't understand is what happens to my overall security posture by adding 'about:internet' or res:// into my trusted sites list. btw - I have been asked to do this by a vendor in order to make their Oracle forms based application work. thanks in advance. I want to migrate most if not all of the programs on my old computer to the new and WET sounded like just the thing. However, it is not clear whether it will actually transfer the programs to the new pc. I have dozens of program suites to install on the new machine, which will be a real pain if I have to reinstall each one via the installation disk. The transfer report details all the programs that I might want to move across, but will the WET program install them on the new pc with comparable settings? If not, is there another solution? Continue reading...

For many weeks now, Windows Update has tried to install the Microsoft.NET 4 Framework Client, but it routinely fails. I need v.4 for a program, so I've gotten serious about trying to fix it. I've gone through numerous solutions in these forums and elsewhere on the Web, but nothing has worked. Every time, the installer gets to somewhere between 30 and 60 percent, and then rolls back. I would welcome any assistance. Continue reading...

Pastor in our church had a key laptop that wouldn't boot. Being the "go to" IT guy in our church, I ended up with the laptop to fix. Diagnosed the problem to a dying hard disk. Of course he had no backups. :( Laptop was out of warantee and because of the way the big box stores install Windows on the machines, they don't issue a Windows recovery disk anymore. :( [Microsoft needs to re-evaluate this policy] Using Ubuntu Linux Live, I was able to boot the machine, and from Linux in memory, mount the hard disk, and copy his data folders to an external usb disk. I purchased (and donated) a replacement hard disk. After replacing the hard disk, I loaded one of my TechNet l…
