not sure where to post this but my friend recently had a call from a company saying they were calling on behalf of microsoft and said she had major errors and a virus on her computer, they told her to type various things and then she had to type a code in so they could gain remote access, over an hour later and after deleting many files they said they had fixed it and said she had to pay nearly £200 when she said that she didnt have the money they hung up. they called back a few minutes later and said they could get it down to £83. she got a call a few months before this and they said then that she had to pay £83 and that would be it and she would be covered. do microsoft…

I have a Dell Inspiron 4100 laptop configured for booting either Windows XP (the original operating system on the machine) or another OS. Part of that configuration is a modification of the master boot record, MBR, to enable the use of a bootloader known as GRUB. GRUB presents the user a menu for OS selection at the time the machine is started up. I have seen claims that MSE may identify the GRUB MBR modifications as evidence of malware and then automatically restore the MBR to a Microsoft standard, thereby disabling the dual boot configuration of the machine. I can easily imagine this happening, especially in early versions of MSE code. My question is, "Should I b…

My PC aquired the "XP 2012 Security Virus" near the end of Dec. Security Essentials did not detect this. I had no luck in removing it until I reformatted my C Drive and re-installed the system. Every thing was fine until a few days ago when I noticed that the malware was again present, Unfortunately I did not look at it closely, I just shut down my computer and left it alone for a few days. ( note: when this malware is present, I have no access to my virus protection program. ) The next time I booted it up, access to my SecurityEssentials was back and I did a full scan. Nothing was found and the computer seems normal. Security Essentials shows nothing in it's history lo…

Hi, I'm running Windows XP Pro sp3 and SE. I prefer to use the computer as a standard user for my general computing needs. I have found, however, that SE's real-time protection interferes with some of my games I like to play but the only way I can find to disable it is when logged in as the administrator. Any ideas how I can extend the rights to disable real-time protection to my standard user account so I can just disable it before playing and then enable it again once I'm done. It's kind of a pain to switch users often like that. I tried right-clicking on it in the Start menu and selecting Run As... but it just errors out saying it can't start more than once…

Will a slot for SD cards or Micro SD be available on future Windows Tablets? How about memory upgrades and program upgrades? Will the new tablets be "locked" to whatever memory and programming comes with them and not able to upgrade? If so, what does a person do when they are locked into a 24 month commitment with their provider for communications services and a new model comes out? What will Microsoft do about this? Is the customer simply 'stuck' because the latest model that they bought went out of date in 6 months? This is not just a question for the consumer but for those in the industry to discuss. I know the reason for a lot of APPLE purchases is that there is s…

Hi, This problem just recently started occurring. I have internet explorer 9 by the way. I don't know if I turned off some kind of setting or something, but I do NOT see the 10 most visited sites like I always had when opening a new tab. The page is just BLANK. Can anyone tell me why this is? I am very annoyed that I do not see this picture below when I open a new tab. Instead.... it's entirely a blank, white screen. And I want to know how to fix that so I can see my recent sites again. Thank you! Continue reading...

I have installed a surveillance system on my computer (Spectorsoft) to monitor the use of my computer.
