Recieved XP SP3 disc in mail today, computers can't read it. XP Pro machine said "Windows can't read this file, it could be corrupted or in a format Windows can't read" or something like that. The disc has some weird smudges, scratches on it. These are not surface marks, rather in the disc. New to this forum so I hope this works...... Continue reading...

Not remembering docked profile information
by Guest mk122957- 0 replies
I have a HP Elitebook laptop running Windows 7 Pro x64 that is using a docking station that has a external monitor connected to it. Recently I had the need to run system file checker to fix a .Net issue we were experiencing, which worked just fine. The issue afterwards is that after numerous reboots and docking and undocking cycles. The system does not remember that there is a second monitor connected to the system at all. Each time I undock and redock I need to reconfigure the external monitor. I was under the impression that Windows saved the this information in a "Docked" and "Undocked" profile so this was not neccessary each time. Any suggestions on getting this…

Can an IE9 Accelerator substitute selected text into a configurable URL?
by Guest Jim Thorstad - IBI- 0 replies
Would like to develop an Accelerator that when used on text in a web page (e.g., by selecting the text 130801 in an html report) would open a new IE9 tab and make a web request like http://server.abc.com:15010/reports/projectstatus.jsp?project=130801&view=fullstatus The accelerator should allow the full URL to be configured per user, including where the selected text would be substituted. This would seem to have a lot of uses but so far all the accelerators I see seem to be hardwired to web companies driving you to their sites with the context you selected. Continue reading...

Change "Partially Unprotected" message for out-of-date scan
by Guest mfkobe1- 0 replies
A suggestion for the Security Essentials dashboard - when it has been a long time since a scan has been performed, the message in the dashboard should not read "Partially Unprotected." This message implies that the product is not functioning correctly. It should read something along the lines of "Full Scan out of date - please scan the system soon." Continue reading...

Command line installation of printer drivers via printui.dll
by Guest Whiskey72- 0 replies
Is it possible to install printers using printui.dll command line using the bundled windows 7 printer drivers that come with the OS or from the update drivers that can be obtained from Windows Update? I have done this before using the printer drivers and inf file that I've downloaded from a vendor site. But I need to install several printers that come bundled with the Windows 7, that don't have a corresponding download anymore on the vendor site. A couple examples would be the Lexmark Optra M410 or Xerox 3250. I need to find out how to install a new printer object and then simply install additional drivers of various models without creating a new printer object. Contin…

Creating missing MBR for single-boot Win 2k8 R2
by Guest Marc Johnson 2- 0 replies
Hi folks, I have a little problem which I suspect is the same for Windows Server 2k8 R2 and Windows 7: Win 2k8 R2 is installed on partition-1 of a basic disk and I somehow managed to format partition-0 (where the MBR was located) so on rebooting I got the "missing operating system" error. I then tried to repair Windows using the Server 2k8 R2 install DVD, but no OS to repair was found. So I installed a new Win instance on partition-0, creating a proper MBR, to which I tried adding my old Win instance to no avail. I marked partition-1 as an active partition and used EasyBCD to add my old Win instance to the MBR, after which my machine refused to boot (the new error was "…

Yellow Popup Info Balloons
by Guest hugowindows- 0 replies
I have tried for years to figure out a way to stop the rectangular yellow popup balloons that appear when I hover my curser over files and things. It is annoying and conceals information underneath that I am also trying to read. I do not want so much redundancy telling me I am looking at something I know I am looking at. If we have to suffer with it, could it at least appear in some specified place out of the way? I just want to turn it off completely. An expert told me there was a registry item to change. That did nothing. Continue reading...

"Verify that the installation sources are accessible" Error: 0xE0000100
by Guest Tnvlsrule- 0 replies

I'm trying to install Windows 7 Ultimate onto a computer that is currently running Windows 7 RC. When I attempt to do an "upgrade" I get a not-unexpected error involving the inability to upgrade from the RC. However, when I attempt to do a clean install, I get the following error: "Windows installation encountered an unexpected error. Verify that the installation sources are accessible, and restart the installation. Error code: 0xE000100" This error happens regardless of if I try to boot from the disk or run the program after the computer has started. What other information would be helpful? Continue reading...

Why Doesn't Windows 8 Just Look Like THIS?

By: Paul Thurrott Why can’t the Windows 8 desktop really be "no compromises" for those of us with big screens and powerful desktop PCs? That is, why can’t we run traditional Windows applications and Metro-style apps, but in this environment as floating windows, side by side? Continue reading...
