In this blog post I’d like to talk about a new file system for Windows. This file system, which we call ReFS, has been designed from the ground up to meet a broad set of customer requirements, both today’s and tomorrow’s, for all the different ways that Windows is deployed. The key goals of ReFS are: Maintain a high degree of compatibility with a subset of NTFS features that are widely adopted while deprecating others that provide limited value at the cost of system complexity and footprint. Verify and auto-correct data. Data can get corrupted due to a number of reasons and therefore must be verified and, when possible, corrected automatically. Metadata must not be w…

Deployment Question - Static IP environment -- NETSH and winPE image has been captured - sysprep has been run. I created a front end to capture some user information. branch, time zone, ip / sn /gw info. In winPE I take the captured info and write a small file. Later in the process, take the file and read everything back in - - generate a netsh command. works fine. Do ip config pc has correct IP info. (from the user input data). PC reboots, static IP info is reset back to default. (192.168.xx.xx) I need to have the user entered static IP set on the NIC, prior to the computer trying to automatically joining the domain in hte sysprep process. Continue reading...

I have been using the Norton AV on my H Netbook (HP Mini) recently I started to experience double-booting on my MSN Homepage as well as the Hotmail Page. I am wondering if I uninstall the Norton AV which was suggested by the HP/Norton representatives and install the Microsoft Essentials Software will I find an improvement in the functionality of my Netbook or will I continue to experiernce this problem? I have already indicated on my Hotmail page that this system is compromised. Oddly enough this situation began to occur following my Mother accessing eBay with this computer and followed it up by accessing her personal MSN account. Is this indicative of a virus which bypa…

I was having periodic problems with my laptop coming out of sleep, so I decided to reinstall W7 on an SSD. Since SP1 had just been released, I went with that. The first time the laptop woke from hibernation, I received a BSOD with the error 0x000000f4. I decided to disable hibernation. When my laptop came out of sleep mode, same BSOD code. Now the laptop blue screens whenever it wakes. Also, the manufacturer calls this a 128 GB drive, but Windows installation identified it as 120 GB. Continue reading...

by Guest W Y Wong- 0 replies

Hi, It certainly looks like an old topic but I could not pin down any known solution after searching for days. I've got users using Excel 2003 sp3 accessing file in a share drive. Everything was fine for more than a year until recently the client computers were upgraded from Windows XP sp2 to sp3. Then users began to experience this sharing violation error. Sometimes, after a user finished edit a file, he/she was not able to save the file and got the share violation error. But, this only happen intermittently. Also, if the file was already opened, when another user tried to open it, his / her computer could freeze. Checking in the task manager and found that e…

Cannot install Windows XP because of black screen at start of text-mode setup
by Guest apterpstra- 0 replies

I have 10 years of experience installing Windows, but lately I have been plagued by the following problem. On some computers that have been installed before (it doesn't happen on clean systems) I want to reinstall Windows XP. These computers almost all are multi-boot setups. The problem is that the setup will not even start, because a display driver apparently doesn't get loaded or maybe loads wrongly at ther very beginning. To be exact, immediately after the very first setup message "Setup is inspecting ...". Then the screen goes blank, the HD activity light starts to blink, but nothing else happens. I know the hardware is not at fault because the computer works pe…

Win7 SP1 some quirky issues
by Guest Jerry2800- 0 replies
After doing several clean installs, I narrowed down issues to SP1. Issues I have seen: 1. Running both IE 8 or 9, when browsing, my mouse wheel no longer scrolls up and down in browsers. I tried other apps and browsers and it scrolls fine in those. 2. My icons on desktop have been re-aligned in grid setup. Even though I turn off the desktop icon functions (left click desktop and select View), I am no longer able to move icons around on desktop. 3. 75% of time browsing to website, IE crashes with error about disabling addons. All addons either removed or disabled and still same results. Even tried to turn off the Enable protect memory option under IE options, bu…
