Hi, I have MS office 2010 on my laptop. My laptop for whatever reason will not connect to the internet after many hours with tech support. So I would like to use my MS license key on my husbands computer, but when I try to enter it it says no such key exists. Yes, I've typed it many times, not sure why it's not working. If I uninstall office from my laptop will that free up a "key" so to speak and allow me to activate my husband's liscence? I really dont want to uninstall it from my laptop and then it may not work on his. Please help :( Continue reading...

Hi, I can't get this to work. It works fine for Excel 2007 but not Excel 2010. I have tried the two usual methods, setting: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Excel\Security] "ExtensionHardening"=dword:00000000 and also via Group Policy. The GPO has taken effect and the registry value appears under the Policies key. However, Excel 2010 refuses to open, for example, an xlsx extension if the format is xls. I get the usual "Excel cannot open the file 'filename' because the format or file extension is not valid. Verify that the file has not been corrupted and that the file extension matches the format of the file.". The "ExtensionHardening=0" value should…

I've been working for a couple days to set up a Windows XP Professional (SP3) machine to be a kiosk computer. After a great deal of digging, I found and downloaded SteadyState 2.5 - which seems to be essentially discontinued -and some KB articles on how to modify the registry so the computer will run in Kiosk mode and open a browser to a specific URL. However, after following these steps and configuring SteadyState as needed, when I log in as the standard user or the admin user I get a blank screen. Nothing ever loads even though I've used the exact syntax given in the KB article for the Shell key in the registry. Does this not work any longer? Is there a better way to d…

I have a new computer laptop, and am a novice. I'm unable to open web pages like Ebay, State Farm and others. I visit many other places on the web. I've checked connections. I've unplugged and replugged the DSL connection, the modem, the router. I've reset the router button. I've followed the "DIAGNOSE CONNECTION" instructions several times and they're diagnosis is not always the same. I've gone to the computer store where we made the purchase and they ARE able to access these and all sites from their location. They want to charge me a bunch of cash to come to my home to diagnose the problem, which as far as I'm concerned will end my relationship with them. PLEASE ADVIS…

In Windows XP Professional SP3, I'm trying to set up a Software Restriction Policy for 'Limited User' accounts such as the apparently very clever one recommended at http://www.mechbgon.com/srp/index.html. Looking into Microsoft's guidance on SRP (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/aa940985.aspx?ppud=4), I thinkI see how to set up one side of this equation -- specify the EXECUTION directory or directories for non-administrators. What I don't immediately see is the other side of the equation: How do you prevent the LUA from SAVING files in the specified execution directory? The reference above wants to restrict saving by non-administrators to a specific, DIFFEREN…

I can NOT get MSE to run a scheduled scan on my laptop. I've set numerous different options in MSE and nothing with start the scan. I'm running Windows 7. MSE is installed under my user name which has admin privileges. I've noticed the MSE scheduler seems to be separate from the Windows task scheduler (at least the task does not seem to be visible in the Windows task scheduler). I think the issue might have to do with the laptop 'hibernating' at night when the scan is scheduled but there does not seem to be any setting I can find to allow MSE to bring the laptop out of hibernation. Any advice/help would be appreciated - I getting tired of having to start …

As so often happens with new MS products, I just wasted a half a day trying to use this Windows Defender Offline. Each time I try to update the definitions, it ends in an error: "Virus and spyware defintions update failed. Error Code 0x80072f76 Error description: Windows Defender Offline couldn't install the defintion updates. Please try again later" Tried this while booting to a WDO CD, then to a WDO USB key. Same thing. There is nothing inthe user interface to configure the networking, so I don't even know if it has a driver that works with the computer I'm booting. Since there doesn't appear to be anything online, can anyone there suggest how to get this t…

Hello, I've installed Business Contact Manager 2010 for Microsoft Outlook 2010. Now I'm trying to instal the Language pack which I download on this location: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/nl-nl/details.aspx?FamilyID=CCF25985-31AB-48FD-8E98-981C6FADE302&displaylang=nl. When downloaded and started I get this weird screen of Windows Installer: Clicking OK or the "X" won't help, the screen disappears, but with another try it still gives this message. The same file installs correctly on another PC. Can someone help? We can't use our database when we can't get the langpack to install. please help. Kind Regards from Holland Continue reading...

By Paul Thurrott Microsoft this week began a new "Must Have Games" campaign that will see the release of a new slate of Xbox LIVE games for Windows Phone that will run through the entire month of February. And there are some great-looking games on the way, though those familiar with mobile gaming will recognize that a few of these were previously available on iOS and Android. Continue reading...

I am using windows 7 32 bit I have two hard drives Windows is installed on C and I believe it is partitioned with a small recovery E drive. I have most of my installed software on D drive. I want to just back up some data and email items from C drive. I want to do a fresh install of Windows 7 64 bit on C drive. 1. Will my software and data on D be safe from the install of Windows 7 64 bit on C drive so I will not have to back up that drive? 2. Can I run a selected backup of C drive and store on D drive? 3. Could I do the back up to the partitioned E drive and install Windows 7 64 bit to C drive, or will Windows want to format the whole drive to 64 bit? Than…

By Paul Thurrott Struggling smart phone giant Nokia on Thursday announced its financial results for the quarter ending December 31, 2011. And while the press will focus largely on the company’s continued attempts to turn things around--it posted a net loss of $1.4 billion on revenues of over $13 billion--there was some good news to report as well: Nokia confirmed it has sold "well over" one million Windows Phone handsets so far. Not bad for a new product line that’s only been the market for roughly two months. Continue reading...

I have even changed the recommended actions in the Settings tab to "Quarantine" vice "Recommended Action" and told it not to delete the threats yet, but it still shows NO threats ... AT ALL ... which is Very hard to believe. Also, after ANY MS update that requires a restart, the MSE icon that is normally in the lower right quick-launch/task/clock bar disappears, never to be seen again. The ONLY way I can get it back is to Remove & re-Install MSE. I have emailed microsoft and the MSE people (of course, 2 different entities.... that can't talk to each other ...) and they have never heard of this before. ... and it Still does this, and Microsoft Still doesn't care (I …
