When I add the %TEMP%, or even the fully qualified path to the TEMP folder to a trusted location in Group Policy, the office apps SHOW they are added in the trust center, but they are greyed out and don't appear to work. We have an UGLY app we're doing some testing on it's compatibility with Office 2010, and want, strictly for testing purposes, having the temp folder trusted. Office just seems to have it baked right in, that %TEMP% is NOT SAFE, and simply won't use it, even when it IS trusted. Thoughts? Is this possibly in any way? Thanks. Continue reading...

Then it is followed by options on picking my primary search provider. Recently I have come across several pc's in our environment that are getting this error when they open TIF files etc. or anything to do with Windows Fax and Viewer. I have resolved the issue by replacing the shimgvw.dll files on their systems. What I want to find out is 1. what happened that caused so many pc's to have this issue. 2. Is there an update or security files we need to download to prevent recurrence. 3. How do I look for in a pc that is having the issue to pinpoint what occurred and at what time Continue reading...

Hello, I am getting ready to deploy 30 new machines and would like them to automatically join the domain. I am wondering what best practice is in regards to the account used to do this. I know if I were to just use an Unattend.xml for my image, I can specify it to join the domain. It asks for a domain user name and password. Are these values encrypted in the unattend.xml? What about if I were to use MDT? I understand I can have a machine join the domain by specifying the settings in CustomSettings.ini. Are these values protected at all? What is best practice in this regard? Thank you. Continue reading...

I am working on a Windows 7 deployment where we require the Power Management settings of the network adapter disabled. I have looked at local group policy settings in Windows 7 however cannot locate the setting to disable this prior to sysprep. Would anyone have a suggestion of a script or registry update that would disable this feature in the network adapter settings? This would be for a PC rollout, so there would only be one network adapter. Thanks! Continue reading...

Hi there! I'm having difficulty finding information on the security risks related to binary and script behaviors. From what I understand binary behaviors are run with the same permissions as the local user. Users in my environment still work with local administrator permissions (for the moment, that is just the way it is) so I would think that binary behaviors enabled in the Internet zone could potentially be a very dangerous thing. So I disabled Binary and Script Behaviors in the internet zone via group policy. However, this caused a somewhat commonly used internet website (mapfan.com) to stop working. I need to figure out what I should do with this binary be…

I manage a computer lab at a school. We are currently using Windows XP, and we want to migrate to Windows 7. Students use their unique network ID's to log in. This means that every time a student comes in to the computer, he or she is a new user, as far as the computer is concerned. I need to set these machines so they don't ask all the first time user questions every time a student logs in. In XP, this was relatively easy. I created a default profile, and everyone logging in saw exactly the same thing. With Windows 7, this is not so easy. I can still create a default profile, but settings specific to many applications do not get copied. So when a user opens Interne…
