UNATTEND.XML, SYSPREP and ME
by Guest LisaLow- 0 replies

Folks, We are currently running Windows XP and are in the process of moving to Windows 7 (POC phase). We have developed a base image that runs in a virtual machine for now and an answer file. I have tried the following (all of which have failed): Using a virtual floppy with the attached answer file renamed as autoattend.xml Placing the attached answer file in the SYSPREP folder Running sysprep and specifying the answer file with syntax (see below). The syntax I used is as follows sysprep.exe /oobe /generalize /reboot /unattend:c:\windows\system32\sysprep\unattend.xml When the virtual machine reboots, the virtual machine enters OOBE and prompts me for the u…

Weird bug: Background & hidden processes suddenly appear as open apps
by Guest greg.dent- 0 replies
Hi all, I've had a weird bug occur on one of our domain machines recently, which I have seen only once before in my life... A user complained that applications suddenly started opening up on their own, after the user clicked on something (not sure what but it wasn't anything out of the ordinary). At first I thought they had a stuck key on the keyboard or something, but after I looked at the user's screen, I was shocked to find something altogether different. Most of the processes that normally run in the background and some that are completely hidden, suddenly opened up in their own seperate window on-screen, as if they were applications. They also appeared on th…

Boot from Win7 (or whatever) CD/DVD to restore laptop from RECOVERY .WIM image
by Guest theodorosc- 0 replies

Good morning to all ! I have a Dell Inspiron laptop with a RECOVERY partition that has several .WIM images. After trying to resize the OS partition that had win7 (so now the DELL MBR is gone, so I can't CTRL+F11 to access the recovery procedure) ,I formated the HDD (not the RECOVERY partition). And now I want to restore to factory settings I found information on the net that I can restore my laptop to factory settings if I *somehow* manage to boot from a CD/DVD that has the imagex.exe tool and give from the command prompt (of the let's say win7 DVD) something like: imagex /apply path_to_wim_images/FACTORY.WIM 1 C:\ (path is in the RECOVERY partition, and C the now…

We have a very strange issue with Internet Explorer 9. The ‘View Downloads’ (or Ctrl + J) window will not appear. This problem happens in IE9 32bit, but does not happen in IE9 64 bit! Things we have tried · Resetting Internet Explorer Settings · Running Internet Explorer without any add-ons · Deleting the Browsing History (including ‘Download History’) · Deleting the index.dat file for the user · Tried from a different user profile (same issue) · Uninstalling IE9 by removing the update, and then reinstalling Any suggestions on where to go next would be appreciated! How to get .rtf files to open in internet explorer?
by Guest Adarsh Menon- 0 replies
I am trying to open different file types in Internet Explorer 6. PDF files were ok. To open Microsoft Office filetypes, I used information from the following support article:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927009 . This was done by tweaking the "BrowserFlags" entry in the Registry. But I cannot do the same for .rtf files. On a machine which doesn't have Microsoft Office installed, the .doc filetype tends to default to Wordpad as the application. So what I want to achieve is that - On a computer that doesn't have Microsoft office installed, if I try to open a link (href) to a .doc it should open in the browser (even if it is associated with Wordpad by default). Is it pos…

Why does MS Security Essentials keep wanting to Update and rescan?
by Guest John Heathe- 0 replies
I have been running MS Sec. Ess. for a long time. Today, all of a sudden after an update, it is trying to re-update. I have done both a Full Scan and several Quick Scans, and I still have an Amber "computer may be at risk" warning. I thought the program would keep up by itself. I am thinking of re-installing it. In the meantime, I am doing an online scan with MS Safety Scanner as I have noticed my computer slowing down and using 98% of physical memory (which is 8 Gigs!), never seen this before. I am also un-installing a couple of programs that seem to be connected - HTC Sync and Adobe Air which seems to be required with HTC Sync... Any ideas? Thanks, John …

Microsoft Security Essential tells me " Library not registered" go to Help.
by Guest Jack -JohnDavies- 0 replies

When I type Library not registered into Help I am told that it doesn't recognize the question, even though the words come from a Windows program. No wonder people switch to Apple. I was going to give you the whole original error message but for some reason Microsoft won't let me highlight and copy it. Okay I will type it all in. It said, "Security Essentials couldn't remove some of the detected threats Library not registered" The Help file can't even recognize it's own problem Continue reading...

Seagate Hard Drives not detected by the Windows 7 installer
by Guest Kougar- 0 replies
I've spent hours on this trying every conceivable reason, so I apologize in advance for the length on this post. I connected a Seagate 320GB 7200.10 hard drive to a P35 chipset system and attempted to install Windows 7 RTM onto it. The installer got to the part of detecting hard drives, but could not detect this drive. Native SATA mode was enabled, and AHCI was enabled. I disabled Native SATA mode, then after that failed I also tried disabling AHCI by setting the controller to IDE mode. Still, the Windows 7 installer refused to detect the drive. I replaced both the SATA & power cables, verified the drives are detected by the AHCI firmware and the BIOS, and I …

I purhased Office 2010 Office Plus through an employee discount program. I downloaded and installed it, supplying the installation key, which was initially accepted. The installation seemed to be complete. Launching any of the apps within the suite, however, yields a dialog box wherein I am to input an installation key. Doing so yields an error message that my installation key is not accepted. WTH, over? Thanks for any help- Continue reading...
