i'm running xp and using security essentials exclusively...the virus is blocking me from internet access so I cannot simply download a removal tool...and all microsoft online help i've checked wants to be paid...screw that...i'll throw this piece of junkk into the river first...in my opinion the "experts" that need to be paid to help someone out of jam like the one I'm in...are even worse than the hackers that built the virus and go it onto my computer....not much worse, but certainly in the same ballpark... Anyone....???? Continue reading...

Hi all I have a website that I have marked as a Trusted Site. The green tick appears at the bottom. However, when I access the site, I get the familiar ActiveX warning bar along the top. "To help protect your security, Internet Explorer has restricted this webpage from running scripts or ActiveX controls..." If I "allow blocked content", then I have to reload the page and I am once again present with the same warning bar - I'm going in circles! It never appears to allow me to run the content. I have attempted to make custom changes to the Trusted Site security features, making sure that all ActiveX settings are set to Enable where appropriate. I should not be pre…

Hello, I would like to enquire if the commands to start the “Unattended Installation” deployment method, can be successfully run in the “Command Prompt” that is an option when you open “Windows RE”, from the Windows 7 Installation DVD. “Windows RE” is of course a Recovery Environment. So, if no operating system is yet on the machine, is it still possible to access the “Recovery Environment” using the Installation DVD? If such is possible, can the commands necessary to install an Image from a Network Share, be run successfully in the “Command Prompt” that is available as an option in “Windows RE”? I look forward with interest to the solution to these queri…

Hello: I have a working XP Pro (SP3) system that is functioning, perfectly. However, it was built with the system SATA storage controller set to IDE, instead of AHCI or RAID. The following Microsoft KB article (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/922976) describes a method that allows one to change the SATA storage controller mode from IDE to either AHCI (my preference in this example) or RAID, WITHOUT reinstalling the operating system however, the method is only good for Microsoft Windows Vista and Microsoft Windows 7. Since these operating systems support AHCI and RAID SATA modes, natively, unlike Microsoft Windows XP, my assumption is that this is why Microsoft has …

I am deploying new Windows 7 64 bit systems. I have looked all over and found what people "think" is the right anwser in reguards to the 100MB partition Windows 7 makes on a fresh install. I know that if the drive that you are installing Windows 7 on is formated already it will not make the partition. I know BitLocker uses that partition to write data to. Here is my question... Do I need that partition if I am not using BitLocker? If I don't then I need documentation from Microsoft that supports the decision not to use it. Please Help Continue reading...

Loadstate.exe v 4 loaded from WAIK gives "LoadState return code: 71". This is a brand new x64 Win7 install with a fresh load of AIK. What is going on? It won't run. Version 3 complained that it was x32 and couldn't read the x64 USMT2.UNT file. But this one doesn't get that far. I really need my files and setting from XP x64. How do I get this program to run? When trying to import emails from Outlook to Thunderbird the trojan win32/Aegrus is detected in a file named mapiattach.tmp which is created by Thunderbird. MS Security Essentils deletes the file and the import fails. This occurs repeatedly. The implication is that the virus is in an email or attachment being imported but a full PC scan and a scan of the Outlook message files does not find the virus. What do I do next? Continue reading...

Hi all I'm trying to install Windows 7N Pro 64bit on to CD less POS machines that have Intel C200 chipset an Intel 455 Atom dualcore CPU and an SSD drive. I'm apble to get install to work using BIOS setting of IDE compatable but it seems no way to get install going using AHCI setting. I setup the tech machine and went through all steps of the EDT kit and added chipset and network drivers to all Wim files found under the distribution file structure, still nothing happens other than the win PE works fine see's both network and disk. When I select option 10 from the menu (after settingup harddrive partitions) Windows install starts and is normal until install GUI can't fi…

By Paul Thurrott On last week’s Windows Weekly, I raised a topic that I’ve been wondering about for some time: How much user feedback does Microsoft take into account while developing Windows 8? After all, so much of the OS design seems to have been created in secret. But this week, coincidentally, Microsoft published the first of what I assume will be a series of posts addressing this very issue. And for this first entry, the company is examining thousands of items of feedback related to Windows 8 file management. Continue reading...
