I just upgraded my computer to a ASUS mother board with a 64 bit processer and then installed my copy of windows 7 which is a 32 bit copy. Then I upgraded using the windows anytime upgrade to a copy of Windows Ultimate because it stated that I would have access to both 32 bit and 64 bit versions of the OS with that license. After the upgrade which asked me no questions, and was completely automated online, I now have a copy of Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit loaded on my computer. How on earth do I get the installation/upgrade to switch me to the 64 bit version of the operating system? Continue reading...

With many computers, we have a problem. The exploitation system installed is Windows XP Pro corporate edition and all of the computers are connected to a domain. The installed service pack was SP2. This problem occurs in 51 schools (about 4080 computers total). When a student logs in (with an account with no special rights), he do not have the transitions included in Windows Movie Maker. This is not suposed to happens because Windows Movie Maker is not a program that you must run with administrator rights. When I log in with my account (I have administrator rights), I have all the transitions. I tried to update one of the systems with SP3 and all the latest…

Hi - I use IE9 on Windows 7 64bit. At least 3 or 4 times a day IE9 freezes, and won't respond. As many times, there are tabs I can't switch to. And even more often clicking back and forward with the back/forward history buttons jumps to incorrect pages. Are there known issues with IE9? Continue reading...

Hi, There are a ton of "can ping but not browse" posts here and accross the net. I have tried everthing I know and what I have found listed. This post is a last ditch effort before I nuke the system and start from scratch. Your help will be very much appreciated! It all starts when internet is not working, I do a Ping, it works. Next I check the Netowrk Connectins and see a strange 'incomming gateway' connected at 10mb, for a very long time, longer than the PC has been on. I do multiple antimalware scans, the gateway goes away, but still can not browse the internet. I have reset TCP/IP, winsock, flused and registered DNS, tried different DNS server, can ping both ip a…

After serious issues with Windows Install and Media Player, and some connectivity issues, local repair service recommended reformatting and starting over. I have dozens of big and important programs installed and this would be a huge problem. My question is: If I install Win 7 Ultimate over my current (damaged) Win 7 Pro, will I be able to keep all my currently installed programs -- without reformatting? Continue reading...

Hello, I am currently trying to create a answer file for windows 7 pro. when I open WSIM, and click to pull the install.wim on to it it asks to create a catalog file. I have admin privileges so I click yes. It waits a while then gives me the error "Unable to generate a catalog....Details: Access denied". I have changed the permissions giving me full access, still same problem. But when I select to use a catalog file (the one located in the install dvd) it opens with no problem. Help? Log file 2:57 PM : 2:57 PM : Windows SIM was unable to generate a catalog. For troubleshooting assistance, see the topic: 'Windows System Image Manager Technical Reference' in th…

why cant i change the color of web pages I have visited and ones I havnt visited yet in IE9? The blue and the purple are to close to the same color. I went to options, unchecked use default win colors and changed visited to orange. When i do a search, check out a page and hit the back button to my search results its still purple. Hello, I've read that IE9 has a problem with moving the menu bar on top. The GPO setting that was effective with IE7 and IE8 doesn't seem to work anymore. What is the new mechanism to move the menu bar? This of course is a mandatory requirement. There either is a possibility to do that (without manual intervention on every machine) or there will be no roll-out of IE9 on our machines. Can anyone from MS please comment on this issue? Regards, AngusMac Continue reading...

I installed the Foxit PDF reader, but don't want to use Foxit as my default PDF reader. I uninstalled Foxit Toolbar, so that if I go to Tools>Manage Add-ons, I don't see Foxit anywhere. If I go to my Windows program associations, .pdf is associated with Adobe and nothing is associated with Foxit. I also searched the registry for Foxit, but didn't see anything IE-related. Now when I click on links to PDFs in IE, sometimes IE uses Acrobat Reader (which is what I want), and sometimes IE gives me the Information Bar with "This website wants to run the following add-on: 'FoxitReaderOCX ActiveX Control Module' from 'Foxit Corporation'. If you trust the website and the add…

Running Windows 7, SP1 but when I try installing Windows 7 USB/DVD download tool, nothing happens. It just sits there. I waited up to 15 minutes for a response from my machine, but no go. Tried rebooting, running as administrator, redownloading. Still no joy. Ended up going to an XP machine to create the bootable .iso but would like to be able to do this on my Win7 box. Thanks for any input. Joe Continue reading...

Windows 7 SP1 installation fails on six of seven PCs. All seven had either a clean Windows 7 Professional (32-bit) install, or a relatively clean Windows 7 Professional (32) install with all previously available Windows 7 Windows Updates applied, and very few or NO other applications installed -- e.g., just Microsoft Security Essentials, Adobe Reader, graphics adapter driver and printer drivers, etc., at most, if any. On the one PC out of the seven that I tried where SP1 did install successfully, it failed on its mate, an identical (literally) PC. The links on the resulting panel that pops up when the SP1 install fails gives five things to try. I've tried all five and a …

I cannot sign in with my live ID to social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums I am using Internet Explorer 9 on Windows 7. On http://technet.microsoft.com/, If I click "Sign in", I am referred to the login.live.com page to sign in. Login succeeds and I am referred back to http://technet.microsoft.com/de-de/ If I click "Foren" to enter the forum, then these two pages play "ping-pong" referring me back and forth about eight times: 1) http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/de-de/categories/ 2) https://login.live.com/login.srf?wa=wsignin1.0&wtrealm=social.technet.microsoft.com&wreply=https%3a%2f%2fsocial.technet.microsoft.com%2fForums%2fde-de%2fcategories%2f%3fst…

OK, here's the issue... Running XP Professional on a Server 2003 server. The computer has no errors in networking normally. I installed a VPN client that has installed with no problems on several other computers running Windows XP, Vista, or 7. When I install the client and reboot, the user can still logon, but it gives an error saying that it cannot connect to the desktop profile. As a result, no icons are displayed. I am about to wipe and reload because obviously some settings have been changed. Google has been no help, the knowledgebase has been no help, I would appreciate some pointers so that I can resolve without taking drastic action. Any thoughts? C…
