Weve featured several posts about how were working to improve battery life for Windows 8 PCs. In Pat Stemens What about background copy jobs. If I put explorer application to background to look [at or] write a word document, do you mean the copy-job is paused until I "fullscreen" the copy-job again? Seriously? The answer to that question is no, file copy will definitely continue to work exactly as it does today and will not get suspended if you start a copy job and then go do something else while it completes in the background. This works the same whether you are in front of the PC using it or leave the PC long enough for the screen saver or lock screen to kick in. Su…

By Paul Thurrott In Windows 8, Microsoft isn’t just replacing the Windows shell with the new Metro-style Start screen. It’s also replacing the low-level Windows runtime engine with a new technology called WinRT. What does this mean to you? It means that Windows 8 really is a complete reimagining of Microsoft’s dominant operating system. Continue reading...

Hello we have a laptop that is running windows 7 64-bit with office 2010 professional. It is wired to a server running server 2003. Everything is fine while connected to the server but once it is offline it will not do anything with Microsoft Office. When I run Word i get normal.dotm errors. I tried repairing office, deleting and recreating the .dotm file but with no luck. My boss needs to work offline away from the server but at this time he cant because of this issue. I enabled files for offline use but they cannot be edited because of the office problems. This is an urgent situation so any help is greatly appreciated. Continue reading...

Hi, Our IT department are blaming a website development we have put in on user experiencing blue screen Stop Errors. After browsing google, I think most would say that it is not the cause and the fact that it only affects internal users and not external users adds further weight to the argument, I feel. I was just wondering if there was any authority I can give in response rather than "I googled it and don't think it did" or, indeed, if there is a way in which the website could have caused it. When I say "caused it" I do mean directly. I understand that the website can cause some software to run that would result in the error but I feel this would be the responsibility…

Hello everyone I need some assistance in deploying Windows 7. The way that my company does it now is we build a system with our enterprise edition of W7 on any new hardware we get in. For instance we have 30 new desktops in now. We then go to Backup and Restore and create a system image onto an external hard drive. Once this completes we get another system stick in the USB containing our copy of Win7 and when it loads the files to memory we select "Repair your computer". From there you can load the system image onto the new machine. Reboot, then run sysprep with OOBE to make sure the machine gets unique SID and everything else sysprep does to the machine. My line of thi…

Everyone in our office sends out the same introductory emails and various memo's and reports to our clients. We have a master folder on our server that has the word document with the text that we usually just copy and paste into the email, but I feel that the auto text feature would work so much better. We want to be able to create the template on one computer for the various memos/invitations, etc., that we send and then acces them on the other computers in the office. Microsoft tech support was no help and every forum and blog I have found explains about 5 different ways, all of which I don't understand. Please help! Continue reading...

I am adding a local account in the oobeSystem pass in the Sysprep answer file (Microsoft-Windows-Shell-Setup > UserAccounts). That works fine but there is no option to set the account password to 'never expires'. So, I would like to use a WMIC command to accomplish that task but I'm not sure where to place it in unattend.xml. The only place I can find to run the command is in the Specialize pass (Microsoft-Windows-Deployment > RunSyncronous) but during deployment the Specialize pass runs before the oobeSystem pass so that won't work. In the oobeSystem pass > Microsoft-Windows-Shell-Setup there is a component called FirstLoginCommands but I am assuming those com…

So I moved about a year ago and my windows 7 disc is in storage somewhere in some unknown box. My brother in law has a computer business so i borrowed an extra windows 7 disc. Using magical jellybean keyfinder, I found the key of my own windows 7. I went to reinstall windows 7 using the disc he gave me, but when I enter the key from MY PURCHASED DISC, it tells me the key doesn't match the SKU number . Is there some way around this? I paid a lot of money for Windows 7 and I've done this same thing with XP and Vista and never had this problem. Now I'm stuck in limbo with no operating system and no way to get my old disc because there was a fire in the building and we …

Hi guys. My target machine was a Windows XP, Service Pack 3 machine. Symptoms present were: When trying to browse to google.com I got the error. "404 not found" ngnix. I check the hosts file but nothing was in there. The only thing that I could think that would cause this was a virus. I put in the system sweeper and booted. I downloaded the latest security essentials definitions from the link provided by system sweeper and browsed and installed them from system sweeper. I then performed a scan of the target system. System sweeper came back and reported that the system was clean of malware/viruses. I thought this cannot be so. I had an old Avast B…
